I have my cat out too with just a pipe in its place. It doesn't make all that much of a noise difference just a little and I noticed a Slight gain in performance, yet I don't have a performance muffler yet. When I flipped my lid I noticed more performance and sound than from the pipe. Combined with with other mods it will help. I suggest just do it.

No it's bolted with flanges. I can't weld it because I have to get smogged. When smog time comes I put the cat on again after smog I just switch it back. Take a whole 10-20 min.
