wow it went down to -19C last night and my car barely started this morning.
i was just wondering what is the best viscosity for winter, i would assume thinner is better right? i'm running 10w30 right now but i am thinking about 5w35 just so it idles better at cold

i think you can switch right to it ....i just think after you put synthetic oil in you have to continue to put it in

You can switch to synthetic any time and go back and forth with conventional, if you like. You can mix oils, or use syntheic blends (cheaper) as well.
I use synthetic 10W-30 year round. If your engine is still tight enough not to burn any 5W-30 you can use that year round. Synthetic will remain flowing even at extremely low temperatures so I would say the type of oil is a lot more important that the viscosity numbers in your case.

You can switch from synthetic to standard mineral oil without any problems. For areas that experience freezing temperature, you should use a 5-30 weight oil.
Check your battery if you have problems starting. You many need to replace it.
