My asst. managers 84 BMW 325i just started doing this. The tach will jump up and down. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks.

The experience I had with my car which was similar to that was the screw on the throttle body was loose and it just needed to be tightened. Your assistant manager's may be different, but who knows.

Maybe there's air in the cooling system. Bleed and check the cooling system for leaks.

if its not that check the warm and cold air idle valves (assuming it has some) and for vacuum leaks

My car did this too. Changing the pcv valve fixed it.
