not sure what you mean by kicking in and out, but I'd suggest to just grab a voltage tester, connect it to the battery with car not running and it should read right about 12V. Fire the car up, and if the alternator is working properly, it should read 14V. If you think the alternator works when it wants, turn on the lights, and radio (basically something that will typically draw current), and keep an eye on what the tested reads. If the voltage jumps around with the car idling, then I'd blame the alternator, if it hangs out at a steady voltage, I'd guess that it's all good. But I'm not a mechanic, so that's just IMO.

I got a rewound alternator and mine doesnt "kick in" until almost 1500 rpms, and its very noticeable to me, esp when i have my lights on and the system up its fine when driving, but when i come to a stoplight, my headlights look like strobes, they flicker alot unless i have the engine spinning at 1500-2000 rpms. Does your problem sound somthing like that?

possible diode or regulator fault

First check the belt tension.

yeah, do the obvious shit. Check belt tension, connection at battery terminals, and check the connections at the alternator. I didn't snap the multi-connector in all the way when I did mine, and my charge light would flicker. Then i got up under there, pressed it until it snapped, and I've been running fine for a year ever since.

If it acts irratic it could also need new brushes... how many miles on your car?

By the way... you guys pull the axle to do the alternator or you wrestle it out from on top?

It seems all shops pull the axle but half the individual owners who do it themselves manage to pull it out from the top.

I don't have a shop, so I pull it out from the top :D

Jack the engine a bit and the alternator slides right out.

You have a classic bad rebuild. I hate it when that happens

yea my problem sounds alot like the strobe light thing but it also sounds like it kicks in at around 1500 rpm
