View Full Version : Grandpa, the '86 LXi

I purchased a 1986 Honda Accord LXi for $400 from a NASA engineer on November 3rd, 2005. As my first car at age 16, having grown up in a Honda family, the car died the first 10 miles down the road and left me stranded in need of getting to work. I was out in the middle of nowhere debating just lighting the car on fire. My dad calmed me and helped me source the knowledge and tools to replace my dizzy igniter. I gained a love and respect for how engines worked, their respective designs and uses as before this I had never even thought of working on my own car or really even any car for that matter.
Over the years, I've absorbed knowledge of these cars like a sponge and still to this date I refuse to get rid of the Honda. It's just too damn reliable compared to everything I've been around. I strive to be different from everyone else as following other just makes you a sheep in the herd. EGs, CBs, EFs, crxs...they're a dime a dozen at every corner you turn. This has made the love for my car even greater.

With this said, I've done alot of things to Grandpa from a full rebuild of the engine, Si lude trans and swapping all lighting to LEDs except the Headlights to repainting parts and ordering an abundance of non OEM better performance parts. That's where this thread will begin to grow.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the year. I've postponed installation of several things until it's time for the full OBD1 swap and further exploration of milking more power from our single jingle A20A3 motors while staying N/A. All I'm lacking is a chipped P06 ecu. The funding for that is only a few paychecks away (bills and my 1 year old take most if not all of my check each check). Finally, over the past two years, I've been able to source practically everything I'll need and the time has come.

I'll keep all updated as I have alot planned for this Springtime/summertime.

Thanks Tim. I'll be in ATL around july 5th for a week. If everything goes smoothly, I'll drive this there and can meet my first 3geez member IRL. Lol.

Finally, after a long break and issues with alcoholism, two babies and several headaches I'm happy to say I'm back in the game. The 86' sat for a year and a half. Got it running and obx headers/new exhaust installed. Got to get a new battery, insurance, updated fire tag and 4 fresh tires and I'll be piloting this beast daily again. Wife started working at Polaris last monday so money won't be much of an issue after a few weeks. I have everything for the obd1 swap except a chipped obd1 ecu and distributor. Technically i may have a dizzy if the TD80U obd2 from a d16y7 will work. Anyone know if you can use them?

Just checking in. I'm still alive. When I was younger, finding time to do anything was simple. Nowadays with my scheduling and family, finding time for this sweet love/hate relationship I've got with this 3gee is hard to come by often. Been daily driving it AT LEAST 100+ miles daily to work and home so i don't have much downtime either. I believe I'm gonna take a vacation sometime in February or March and finally go OBD1. Too cold to do much outside without some type of covering or heat. I did paint some under the hood over the summertime after I changed my blown HG(3rd one in 13 years and it always seems to rear its head in gridlock Huntsville City traffic). Went from anodized purple and red to gold. Gold matched the FPR and a few other aftermarket parts I have on there so it seemed best choice. Here's some pics for the time being.

Was painted as so:https://i.imgur.com/wS3nBRY.jpg
Then like this:https://i.imgur.com/a066M4u.jpg
And finally new paint and looks better IMHO:https://i.imgur.com/OAFMZPA.jpg

Innovate Motorsports makes and amazing AFR. Flawless so far, especially compared to the buggy AEM gauges that plagued for awhile:

I did experiment with "3D CF" vinyl on the door panels. Pretty easy to Install and use. Has stuck very well without issue and you can no longer see the drivers side tear on the door, which is what led to this experiment.

Here lately, I've been dealing with some transmission woes. I thought my pressure plate gave out, no longer releasing the clutch to shift gears. One exedy clutch kit later, then TOB return Spring and I still had the no clutch release issue. Clutch cable stay broke under the dash. Cable is just floating there. We tried welding it but the Fluxcore mig welder we have doesn't get hot enough to actually penetrate and fuse the two pieces together, SO...it's time for plan B.

All this work, when i never had to remove the transmission at all... :/

Can you see the break? Looks almost like it snapped clean off.
