Ok here's the deal... I have an 86 Accord LX 5 speed standard transmition... Gears 1-4 and Reverse work great, but When I put it into 5th gear, it feels like the car is in Nuetral... What could be the causes or problems with 5th, and can it be fixed, and or could I fix it myself, and what will I need to fix it??? If N E 1 can help me that would be great, thanks Guy's Lataz.

nah Havent checked for leaks, well not carefully at least, but I only took a quick look and I believe there arent any leaks. I think i might just get a new tranny or rebuilt put in... Doesn n e one have a manual tranny for sale that works and that is selling cheap? Thanks let me know guy's lataz

check the local junk yards for 1984-1987 prelude SI trannys... way better gear ratio's than our accord ones... or get a LXI or SEi tranny... they also had better gears... i would also invest in a new clutch... stock is fine...

I thought the SE-i's only come with automatic transmisions... I have a manual 5 speed tranny, maybe i could get a good deal at the junk yard, and would I be able to do the tranny myself? Thanks bro lataz

naw... they do have 5 speeds... CORONCHO has a 5 speed... any FI A20 accord and Prelude have swapable trannys... the swap takes about 6 hours... less if u have a garage and some experience...

Nah never done a tranny swap before but I may know a friend of mine that may be willing to do it for free... now if I can just get another tranny from the junk yard cheap... I'm sure I won't be paying n e more than 150- 200 bucks for a used 1 at the junk yard, but I will have to wait til tomorrow to see I guess... Thanks for all of your help bro.... another question I have is, since 5th gear is gone... Will gears 1-4 and reverse go too due to 5th being gone??? or will it be fine? Thanks again 4 the help.

i would check the tranny fluid first because the 5 th gear is teh highest gear in the tranny ( i mean it's position ) so it can easiely be fixed by removing it's cover while the tranny is in place ( i guess ) i am sure some can confirm that ! )

So let me get this straight, I should check my tranny fluid first cuz that may be the problem?? 5th gear just feels like it's in Nuetral but I dunno, any 1 know n e thing else? Thanks Lataz

no the fluid is not the solution but may it was the cause ! so check it out and fill it so other gears won't go bad !

ambers car ripped out 5th gear. if the tranny is low on oil the teeth on 5th heat up and strip off..

anyway we found a great 5speed lxi tranny for $75.... took about 5 hours to put it in, and about 2 to get the junkyard tranny out.. (cutting hoses and shit)

keep in mind this was done in the rain in the wind and in 40F weather.. not fun

i had THE EXACT SAME problem. Turned out to be the gears for the 5th gear in the tranny...mine were ROUND no teeth. A tranny shop DOES NOT have to remove the tranny to fix it so don't let a charge like that occur.

I was driving down the road when that happened to me, and that was what it turned out to be. Have a mechanic look at the gears inside the tranny.

Ok Thanks Guy's for the info, I will have a macanic check it out... well as soon as I get the car on the road... for now I'm just working on her, cuz I wanna do some modz 2 it and make it look good when I get it put on the road... but do you think a machanic will do a free dignose test to check 5th gear, and can I only replace the 5th gear or do I have to replace the whole thing??? Thanks guy's Lataz...

Ok now that i know that I can replace just the 5th gear which is good news 4 me.... How much do u think it's going to cost me to get a new one. I'm pretty sure I can go to autozone and they can special order me one, but how much roughly is the new 5th gear going to cost me, and is it a difficult task to complete to put on myself? Thanks.. my mechanic found a WHOLE tranny for $275 at a junk yard (little pricey) and installed it for like $30 (family mechanic gives us great deals) But for a new one it was ridiculous...

Yeah I'm probably going to get a used 5th gear, and hopefully get a buddie of mine to install it for me 4 free... See what happens... do u think I should get a used 5th gear at the junk yard or get a new one? Would a new 5th gear be costy?
