oil filter adaper housing o ring replacement

I have oil leaking, looks like from adapter housing to block ,on my 86 lxi hatchback.looks like it might be diffulcult to reach .how best to change O ring? thanks for any replies Bill

being your should be injected, another way to get to the housing is to remove the factory air cleaner. that will give you plenty of access to change the gasket from the top with the car on the ground

i was able to change the o ring i did it from bottom.it was diffulcult for me working with one hand and not too much vision fun getting oil sender out. but i got it done and its not leaking any more.i had this great car for 26 years now. im an od geezer 77 years old . thanks for all the tips everyone.

Did you remove a half axle to do that? If not, I can't imagine doing it that way. Tackling it from above/top is easier, but you still don't have a full view, even if you remove the air filter box, as mentioned in post #4. I had to use a small hand mirror to get a view of the oil filter base and replacing the gasket.

I didn't remove the half axel.If I ever need to do this job again I would use two bolts ,with heads cut off,as guide pins, tough lining up housing with one hand and starting bolt.I used a 10MM six point socket, didn't want to take any chances rounding off bolts they were tight after 29 years.Thanks again for replies Bill

You definitely did the repair by braille, but health and body issues can often dictate how a repair gets done. My dad was around 67 or so when he couldn't lie under a car anymore. It mad him sickeningly dizzy. Henceforth, all repairs were done topside. Conversely, if bending over an engine bay causes excruciating back pain, then underneath is the right way to do it. Generally, if you're working underneath, a good pair of safety glasses will keep (most of) the grunge and crap from falling into your eyes. Good job getting it done.

Recently had to do this repair, too, nice job.

I went under the car for this, only removed the air filter housing, then put the front of the car on jack-stands. As long as it was up high enough I was able reach up to loosen/tighten, clean, everything.
