Trying to find the right muffler for the sound I want out of the EFI A series.

Right now on my '86, I have the stock '89 4-2-1 manifold & downpipe, going straight into a 22 inch glasspack, my resonator. (https://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=18134&searchTerm=18134) (Straight piped the rest of the way back with stock size diameter)

I'm going for the deepest, rumbliest (as much as a straight four can) sound I can get. I'm debating on these two magnaflow straight-through's. Their only difference is their core size, 2" or 2.5". Both have 2" inlet/outlets.

Will the larger core diameter get my tone deeper? Or will the smaller one have enough deepness and keep away raspiness?

I'm thinking the smaller 2" core will be deeper and get rid of more rasp than the 2.5". They're both 4" round bodies, so the larger diameter core will have less muffling material packed in than the smaller of the two, theoretically allowing more rasp through. 10444 it is

MY car has an aftermarket Magnaflow catalytic converter and a universal 2 1/4" turbo muffler and honestly sounds pretty decent. Don't spend too much money on your muffler. If you want I can try and grab you a sound file.

Sure I'd like to hear. Anyone's for that matter, share what you're running and a video of the sound or something

The 10444 was under $100 so I feel pretty good about it. Would hate to get a $300 N1 only to find I don't like the sound. I've got no cat by the way

i think your looking for a simple answer to a question that's not exactly straight forward. Resonance is a bastard to contend with unless you try to work out the logistics of it or just blatantly build, test, rebuild until you find what your looking for.

so far you have the stock diameter exhaust (1.75"), is the pipe used for the rest of the system aluminized or stainless steel? That will affect the way the material "rings". When i had started building my exhaust I had taken a video of the incomplete setup

This was with 2.25" stainless, 2.25" magnaflow cat, and a 18" Jones resonator (flipped for better flow). After that video i put on a flowmaster muffler. It still drones really bad and is louder somehow with the muffler than it was without it. With the whole setup on the car it is loud but isn't raspy until 3-4k when accelerating, cruising it just has a bad drone. I was considering rebuilding the exhaust again but switching out the flow master for a decent dual out muffler or using a secondary resonator of a different length. A lot of us have used custom made systems with various parts and will little documentation.

it might be worth while to read these articles / links , it may give you better insight as to what direction with pipe diameter and materials.

Just installed the 10444. I took a before and after video but once I reviewed the footage I realized my phone completely changes the sound, so they're useless. Basically, with just a 22" glasspack, I had drone and rasp at load/higher rpms (especially when cold). Adding the muffler has pretty much muted all rasp, and it just sounds smooth. Kinda disappointing, but I still get my pops/"backfires" on deceleration in gear so I'm happy. Muffler looks great, car still sounds cool and I'm less of a disturbance. I think I'm in the good here
