My G/F's 86 LXI has very stiff suspension -- the shocks are bad. I'll probably end up replacing the shocks soon, but I'm wondering if I should replace the springs.

I'm not looking to get performance suspension. I want smooth suspension that absorbs bumps in the road. The Springs are old and have some surface rust, but no breakage. Do springs get stiff when they get old?

Why does suspension get stiff over time? With other cars that I've worked on (like Toyotas with regular Mcpherson struts), when the struts go bad they don't do shit and the car bounces up and down forever. So why is her rigid with age?

Do the shock absorbers rust in place? Do the springs get stiff?

thanks for any help.

MY accord has a stiff suspension, i think its a characteristic of the car. The stock springs are pretty stiff, the shocks arent that hard. Also check for broken springs, that makes it worse and its pretty common.

kyb struts are good for OEM replacements... and the softest "lowering" springs are the H&Rs i think...

then again if you lowered the car you would need tokicos if not konis! :P
