I add 4 quarts of 10W30 motor oil when I change the oil and filter in my 87 Accord LXi hatchback. 220k miles on it

I use 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil in my manual transmission. Cant remember off hand, but its about 2.5 quarts or so for a simple drain and refill.

Make sure you keep the oil lever lin the trans at the proper lever so you dont mess up the fifth gear. I assume you got a 5 speed manual trans?

My Accord owners manual recomends 5W-30 for all climates/seasons for the engine. For the transmission 10W-30 for colder climates and 10W-40 for warmer climates.

Engine oil works for the tranny, but manual transmission fluid is better since it has the right viscosity modifiers and no useless detergents.

don't over fill engine oil ( you will not see it ) , tranny won't overfill because the if you have more in there it will come out !

What the heck is manual transmission fluid? The Honda manual transmissions call for regular engine oil in them, correct?

Thats what I have been using in mine and my local transmission shop also said to use 10w30 or 10w40 too.

Yes, a 5 speed manual gear box. So, the 10w30 oil is the best for such a manual transmission. But the manual says that 5w30 should a accord 86 owner use. What do you think, is there such a big difference ? As the time between the changes, I think is every year, no ?

For the engine: 5W30
The manual recommends a change for engine oil every 5000 miles (7500km) or 6 months.
Transmission: 10W30 for cold climates, 10W40 for warm climates
Charge recommended every 30000 miles (50000km)

You might get slightly smoother shifts if you use MTF (available at Honda dealer), but it's definitely not necessary: 10W40 works fine for me.

i was told that a mechanic said one of the stupidest things honda said was use motor oil in the tranny, he said stick wit tranny fluid in the tranny.

I'm using a 5W-30 fully synthetic oil right now. Since I switched my car leaks a little bit (common with synthetic oil)

well it 's said in the user manual to fill with engine oil ! i have a manual transmission oil in my tranny , it shifts good and smooth ! ( MT oil is much thicker than engine oil ! )

Gear oil is typically much thicker than what our transmissions need to protect their components (80-90 weight for gear oil v. 30-40 weight recommended). Using will reduce your gas mileage and make your transmission run hotter than it would otherwise.
