Hello 3Geez,

My most recent project, a 1989 Accord LX 5 speed, is having some issues. It will not move; it just revs when in gear. I believe that this is because of a bad clutch. Is there anything else that would cause such a problem that I should check? Also, it's speedometer moves when I rev the engine (while the car is not moving). How would I fix this? I overheated the car while letting it warm up and not watching the coolant temp causing it to blow a head gasket. I will be pulling the head and will be sure to check everything before I reinstall a new Ishino head gasket. I will also flush the cooling system and get a new radiator. Is there anything else I should do? I am very busy with school until winter break in a couple of weeks so I may be slow on replying.

Thanks in advance,
Griffin

I would see what the problem is with the car not moving first. To me it sounds like maybe broken axle.

With the cooling issue, i would also check all the hoses even the ones under the intake manifold, replace the thermostat, and if you want make sure that water pump works, i.e. not rotten propeller.

I believe you are right. The car doesn't roll back when in first without the parking brake. The last owner had Brakes Plus replace axle shafts on both sides but didn't have the joints replaced. Maybe one of the axles broken at the joint. I am hoping that when I overheated the engine I just blew the head gasket and warped the head. It won't start now and when I drained the oil it had green fluid in it. Also the car was only idling for 5 minutes until I realized it was hot and turned it off.

If your car is a stick make sure to adjust the clutch cable on the tranny side. Sounds like a busted axel that wont make it move. For the overheating you should first do a pressure test too see if your head gasket needs replacing. Check your cooling system first the radiators start to leak at the plastic endtanks.

Looks like the drivers side axle popped out of the transmission. Any suggestions on getting it back in?

The axle should just pop back in the transmission. Good chance its the wrong one,too short, is why it popped out.

The motor doesnt sound to good I think you got alot of work to do on it.

I agree, get it running first. pull the head and make sure you didnt crack the block, replace head gasket. fill with cheap oil (you probably want to flush the oil out of it becase its mixed with coolant). put in new coolant and burp bleed the system, and see what you have. Check the water pump as well to make sure that its good.

hope you have a garage and more then a basic set of tools.

The car had a blow by on the head gasket. The cylinder head and block appear to be crack free!

Your clutch probably needs to be replaced.
