That is one of the mysteries of these cars. Mine have been spotty. On my sister's old '86, if you turned on the hazards, the blinkers would stop working for a period of time. The hazards do strange things some times. I've struggled with it, but it was long enough ago that I've forgotten what I did or if it had any effect. LOL

All that to say, try cleaning the switch. How-To is here: http://www.3geez.com/forum/how/77873-fix-rebuild-combo-switch-windshield-wiper-switch-cleaning-rebuild.html

and here: http://www.3geez.com/forum/how/60916-fix-rebuild-combo-switch-low-high-beam-headlamp-switch.html

You'll be surprised how dirty they get.

I had this same erratic behavior out of mine & made the turn signals quit working too. It seems the hazard switch on top gets plenty of dirt into the switch. I was able to get it working again (now about 10 years ago and still going) by just removing the covers from the column, then spraying contact cleaner directly into the hazard switch. 15 minute job.

It may be as simple as a loose wire or bad fuse.
