i'd be willing to bet that the b20's are the 3g lude b20's... great for me, but i already have one...
as for the accord/2g lude b20a, is there a difference between those two, in addition to the difference between a 3g lude b20a?

John's Foreign Engines in Lacenter, WA (http://22r.biz/) has one Accord B20A (he calls it a "Canadian B20A5") with auto tranny. He says they get 5 B20A's per shipment but they don't know if they are the Accord or Lude ones till they get in. I'm supposed to IM him tomorrow ("TOYOTA ENGINES") for a pic. Can someone post it? I'm not in the market right now, but, hey, I can dream, can't I?
-B20AMonkey
PS. He says B20A -powered Accords were available in Canada... but rare. Anyone know what this model was called?

Here's the convo if anyone is interested (yes I know my screen name is lame -- anyone know how to change it?)
AnotherCapnJack: Hello
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya
AnotherCapnJack: Do you have access to the B20A engines used in Accords in Japan and Europe?
TOYOTA ENGINES: what year
AnotherCapnJack: 86-89
TOYOTA ENGINES: sohc or dohc
AnotherCapnJack: DOHC
TOYOTA ENGINES: 695 fits 88 prelude
AnotherCapnJack: Thanks, but the B20A5 is not what I am looking for. The B20A is a DOHC used in the 86-89 Accord 2.0i sold only in Japan and some European countries. There is a small but significant market for these engines among Accord owners in the states who want to do a swap.
TOYOTA ENGINES: what b20 are you looking for b203 ?? etc etc
TOYOTA ENGINES: oh i know what you are talking about i have one
TOYOTA ENGINES: it is the same as the b20a5 in fact it is a b20a5
TOYOTA ENGINES: but it has accord mounts
TOYOTA ENGINES: we have one on the shelf they sold them in canada
TOYOTA ENGINES: and other countries but not the us
AnotherCapnJack: yes, the Accord B20A is the same engine as the Prelude B20A, but the mounts are different
TOYOTA ENGINES: 500.00 you can have the one i have
AnotherCapnJack: do you have the transmission as well?
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya i have one its just the end of the day and i am brain dead :-D
TOYOTA ENGINES: onlyt an auto
AnotherCapnJack: no sweat
TOYOTA ENGINES: is it friday yet
TOYOTA ENGINES: we call that a Canadian b20a
AnotherCapnJack: is it the B20A tranny?
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya its bolted to the same engine but it is automatic
AnotherCapnJack: is the tranny included?
TOYOTA ENGINES: no
TOYOTA ENGINES: 700.00 for both
AnotherCapnJack: do you know if the US A20A3 auto tranny fits the B20A?
AnotherCapnJack: (that's the 88-89 EFI Accord engine)
TOYOTA ENGINES: i dont belive so but im not 100% on that
TOYOTA ENGINES: i think if it did
TOYOTA ENGINES: we would sell the b20a's (accord style) for the honda accord
TOYOTA ENGINES: you want auto or
TOYOTA ENGINES: i just checked the tranny doesnt work for the accord you must have the tranny off the b20a
TOYOTA ENGINES: where are you located
AnotherCapnJack: OK. Was the Accord B20A available in Canada?
TOYOTA ENGINES: yes very rare but it was imported to canada
TOYOTA ENGINES: and there is almost no 5 speeds of that style
TOYOTA ENGINES: some guys say none ???
TOYOTA ENGINES: i can give you the whole package for 600.00
AnotherCapnJack: I'm tuned into a 3rd Gen Accord user group and I don't know if they know they were available in Canada (some of them from there)
TOYOTA ENGINES: very rare but that is what we call them is the Canadian b20a5
TOYOTA ENGINES: I only have 1 at this time but we get them in from time to time
AnotherCapnJack: where do you get them from?
TOYOTA ENGINES: Japan
TOYOTA ENGINES: we get like 5 or b20a5's per shipment but we never know which one untill they are here
AnotherCapnJack: does it have all the accessories bolted on?
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya
TOYOTA ENGINES: intake exhuast etc etc dist
AnotherCapnJack: any chance you can send a pic?
TOYOTA ENGINES: if you message me tomorrow and remind me i will send you a picture
TOYOTA ENGINES: i dont have a picture and its to late tonight for me to pull engine off shelf for picture but be glad to do it tomorrow
AnotherCapnJack: OK. Thanks. Have you heard of people swapping B20A's in place of A20A's?
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya
TOYOTA ENGINES: but i have never done it my self
TOYOTA ENGINES: but i do have the correct package to do that swap
AnotherCapnJack: Right. I've seen pics of the swap (it looks sweet), and you can use some of the A20A and Integra B18 components, but most of the components (including trans, from what I can tell) have to be JDM.
TOYOTA ENGINES: ya remind me tomorrow and i will send you a picture
TOYOTA ENGINES: thanks john
AnotherCapnJack: I'll post your pic on the board. People go nuts over them.
TOYOTA ENGINES: cool!!!
AnotherCapnJack: I get home about 6 or 7 EST. Is that too late to IM (can't do it from work)
TOYOTA ENGINES: no we are here till 9 pm your time
TOYOTA ENGINES: its 7.09 here now
AnotherCapnJack: cool, thanks. I'm in New Jersey, but these guys are from all over the place. Do you sell these Canadian B20A's when you get them in?
AnotherCapnJack: Or do they collect dust?
TOYOTA ENGINES: we sell them to guys doing swaps and guys in Canada and a few in germany etc etc
AnotherCapnJack: I see
AnotherCapnJack: Well thanks for the info, I'll IM you tomorrow when I get home.
TOYOTA ENGINES: ok sounds good
AnotherCapnJack: how's the weather out there
TOYOTA ENGINES: rain rain rain
AnotherCapnJack: past 3 weeks it has been colder than heck here, warming up to 50's tomorrow with some rain. Been cold and wet for a while.
... then some comment about %&$#@ Canadian cold fronts, good thing they have good beer and invented hockey ;) and Neil Young... and The Band... yes I know I'm old... leave me alone...

That's not the right engine.....

02-03-2003, 08:30 PM
Yeah i was gonna say it doesnt sound right saying that some were imported to canada and that he has sold them before. He was right about the 5spd being rare. And you can tell the B20A apart cause its simply the B20A and the prelude uses the B20A3 and B20A5 so thats one indication.
carotman
02-03-2003, 08:46 PM
the engine serial number is also an indication

I missed him tonight, maybe tomorrow night. B20A5 with Accord mounts? What else could it be? I'll ask him for the serial # too.

The B20A5 with accord mounts wont work at all. There is a lot of work to be done to fit a B20A5 and Place Racing has done it before and it required cutting the frame and all kinds of crap.

looks like the same b20a in the 89 prelude my friend has.... but i'm not sure what the jdm one looks like so....

02-14-2003, 04:44 AM
ok class! with the lesson I taught you you should be able to determine right away that this is an ACCORD B20A.
THIS is the ocrrect one.
1- It leans forward
2- it says B20A (tough the JDM B20A5 says B20A too)
3- The Airbox is on the back of the intake manifold
4- The Serial number begins with 164
This is all in the FAQ :) :)
Now, if that place has some more of the SAME kind, some fellows will get a nice engine swap.

Uh, yeah, I knew that. I was just, ummm, testing you guys. Yeah, that's the ticket. Anyways, the guy wanted $600 for the whole shebang, if I remember correctly. Could probably talk him down.

hopefully i'm not the only one wondering this, why is it that the 'lude b20's won't fit? i assumed they'd be something like chevy's and only have a difference in mounting for different motor sizes offered in close years. is the block the same? or is the complete motor different?

tell him to get more, and find the manual tranny and it's sold

I took pic's of the B20A we have at the shop. I work for John (ToyotaEngines), and on the B20A we have at the shop the one I bought reads only B20A then the serial # bellow and I know they are the right ones because I researched it.
Plus we just got a gold valve cover B20A in that my friend Lyle bought for his 86 LX-I

am i trippin or is it impossible for any components off an A-series motor to be compatible with a B-series or any other honda series motor, if i could do the b20a5 swap without having to worry about intake/exaust manifolds, trani, and what not i would do it in a heart beat

Okay I am going to foreign engines this week to get a replacement motor for my 86. Can you tell him you're sending a friend over his way? What price range am I looking at for a replacement stock?

The Foreign Engines Inc. that he was talking about is located in Lynnwood, Wash. I got both of my ZC engines through them and they delivered for free. I had no complaints about the engines, they ran fine and were in good condition. They also knew exactly what I was talking about when I called. ZC's are just as confusing to order as a B20a so they should know what they are talking about.
The prices were about $100 more than online but without shipping it saved me $100 in the end.

09-18-2003, 09:40 AM
you got 2 ZC engines?? I've heard those are harder to get then B20's. thats crazy you got 2 of them.
pearldrop
09-18-2003, 09:55 AM
Yeah, and one of them was even with a ZC manual tranny.
RobT5580
09-18-2003, 02:47 PM
I dont think they are that hard to find. I know a lot of people in CT that run them. At least the ZC's are known cause not many people know of the B20A that are not into 3rd gen accords.

What, and how are the ZC engines. I hear about them all the time. Do they have alot of aftermarket mods or no??? how are they overall???

129hp and 106lb-ft@5700 rpm. I think but not positive that the B16 stuff works on them. I dont know why they were so popular but they seemed to do well racing at the track. But then again most people had them in CRX's but i am not impressed with the stock horsepower. But one kid i know that has it got his dirt cheap and it was a drop in swap so he couldnt go wrong for a DOHC engine.
