View Full Version : Occasional stall at idle/surge (This is a long one)

My '89 LX, shortly after I got the car in driving condition, began to stall every time the RPMs would drop to the regular idle for my car (1000-1300). It turned out that one of the EGR lines had come unscrewed on the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. I got the EGR line back on and the car would idle and would idle without vibrating the rest of the car. I did notice that the car seemed to not pull nearly as hard as it did with the EGR lose. The car, with the EGR line loose, would have a nice pull and the front end would lift up when you put your foot down in a short gear. Now, the car still will accelerate but not like before. You can tip into the throttle more when in a higher gear cruising and not speed up too much.

I feel like the power is low and I'm not sure why. I didn't mind so much so after getting the car temp tags today I went and drove around.

I put around 130 miles on the car (spirited mountain roads, highway, and busy city) and the car did great until it began to stall at idle in the middle of the day. When this issue was happening the car would surge under light throttle too (like being in a low short gear and suddenly pushing in the throttle and letting off making the car jump a little). It did this (stall) a few times but then after letting it sit for a few minutes the problem went away and hasn't come back. The car also seems to vibrate enough to vibrate my rear view mirror, but somethings this goes away too.

Here is a video showing the stall:

As you can see the car would start back up easily.

Here is a video of the start after letting the car sit for a few minutes (second start but the first one was exactly the same):

Looks like my temp gauge is grounding out somewhere too.

One of the high idle vacuum lines is broken (the nipple broke so I can't attach the line anymore). I'm am going to just close the line to see if that solved any issues. Here is the broken vacuum line circled in red:

What could cause the constant low power and random stall at idle/low throttle surge?

I can't hear the fuel pump pressurize the system when turning the key to accessory (maybe because I used to hearing one on FI cars with higher fuel pressure than my carburetor)
Does anyone have a good method for testing fuel pumps? How about verifying fuel filters are still good?

The distributer cap and rotor have some corrosion on them but I wouldn't think it would cause issues. I have new NGK spark plugs. I don't know how to read them but can post pics of them if you guys want to check them out. The spark plug wire are from 2007. The carburetor was recently cleaned by a specialist. I am unsure of how old the gas in the car is; I bought the car from the PO because it wouldn't move and then I spend five months working on the car. I did put four gallons of Shell 91 in the car recently. The car has half a tank now so maybe I'll try to put some Shell 87 in.

Do you have a copy of the shop manual. Can you run the test on the Ignition Coil and check the wires leading to and from the coil.

In the video of it stalling when driving, how does it go all the way to 0 RPM, did you have it in neutral or as you noticed it dying you switched into neutral?

Thanks for the input. It turned out to be a lose ground.

The car would hold its RPMs when driving. It would die when I went into neutral and didn't play with the throttle.

Cool, it did look like an electrical issue for how quickly it died.
