I have an '89 DX automatic. It's leaking coolant form what looks like the water pump, but I can't tell for sure,
using an inspection mirror I can't find the weep hole or any other place where the leak may be and it's not just a dribble
it's a steady stream. The leaking coolant is oily but no water in the crank case oil. The coolant in the radiator is clean.
Thanks in advance.
Jim

That is a nasty color of coolant there. So the top picture looks like a pic from underneath the crank pulley. Coolant doesnt flow in that area, it must be running out of the water pump.

Is it dry around your water pump where it connects to the engine block and where the shaft goes into the pump. secondly, how does your oil look?

Yep, it runs off of the crank pulley, but I can't see where it comes from, it's completely dry around the pump and I can't find a weep hole.

The oil is at proper level and dark, as in it needs changing, but no sign of water. If I pour a cup of antifreeze/water in the radiator, clean greenish/yellow, it will all
come down the crank looking as it does in the pic. It sure looks as if it's the pump but I didn't want take it off if I can't find where it's leaking.

There is a metal coolant pipe that's goes from the thermostat area on the other side of the engine and runs under the intake manifold into the back of the water pump area. Where it connects to the water pump area I would check, the pipe gets rusty and doesn't seal. The other area is under the intake manifold there are several coolant hoses which may be busted.

I couldn't find any indication of where it might be leaking so I pulled the pump, what fun that was. Looks
like the seal is cooked, if this was leaking at the bottom I wouldn't be able to see it with the timing belt cover in the way .

I'm going to order one from Majestic, should I use RTV ?

Call your local auto parts store, they might have it. Also rockauto has it Rock Auto water pump gasket (http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/honda,1988,accord,2.0l+l4,1166914,cooling+system,w ater+pump+gasket,2148)

Sorry, I meant the whole pump , don't want to do this this again anytime soon. This pump is a GMP .
I see mixed reviews on this brand, not sure how this pump got put on , only 70,000 original miles, the down side those
are mostly in town, 1 to 2 miles at a time.

I just used Autozone water pumps with no issues. Lifetime warranties so if it leaks again just take it to Autozone for a replacement.

Its typical to put a water pump on when the timing belt is replaced.

And it is typical for any new part you buy today to be junk.

So true. It really saps the fun out of doing your own work.

This ain't gonna be an easy one. Put the pump in today, before putting everything back on I test it, leaks like a sieve. Took the pump back off and made a plate
and neoprene gasket, can't see any place where it's leaking , and that pipe the arrow is pointing to, I can feel all around it, it's dry as a bone.
Is there any freeze plug on the end, if there is it looks like i'll have to pull the lower timing belt cover.

And an added surprise. that plug in the lower cover that you have to pull to get to the bottom water pump bolt, the bolt was missing.

unfortunately, I now have a similar problem. I was trying to jack my transmission into place and it bumped the metal coolant line that runs from the water pump. coolant started leaking down around the oil pan. I can see that the area where the line connects to the water pump is wet with coolant and i think there is another break in the line because it was so rusty. how can I replace this part without losing an arm and a leg? I know I will have to take off the intake manifold now... what all do I need for parts? if the part off the car at my local junk yard is rusted as well, where can I find these parts?

Speedster, I have dealt with this issue. First I took it off without taking the intake manifold off. The pipe is held on by one bolt i beleive. I was able to get to it using an extra long crescent wrench from the thermostat side. If I had one of those wratcheching pivot crescent wrench it would have been a lot easier. Then I took the coolant pipe to a welding place and they welded a new end on it somehow. It cost me like $20

how did you disconnect it from where it goes into the water pump? i've got all the hoses and that bolt disconnected, but it doesnt want to pull out. does the pipe screw in? do I have to open the water pump?

It simply pulls out. There is an o-ring that seals it and its not very tight. You can twist if you want. Can you wiggle the pipe around?

I got it out shortly after posting that... I guess the pipe was in better condition than I thought. I couldnt tell if it was breaking loose or if I was just fatiguing it. could I just replace the o-ring? what exactly did the machine shop do?

here's a picture of the culprit:

Yours looks like its in good condition. Maybe you could hit it with a layer of paint where its not covered up by the o-ring or hoses. I would definitely bring the pipe and O-ring into the auto store to get a new one. I'm sure they could find one that would fit.

The shop i went to cut a piece of pipe off from another honda and put it on my pipe. I have no idea of the year or anything, but if they can do welding then they can fix a pipe.

yeah, i'm just gonna paint it and put a new o-ring on. thanks for the info on that little bolt. I would have completely missed it if I didnt know about it from you. that saved me a lot of time.

It's taken me this long to fix the leak, it was a freeze/core plug and what fun it was to fix.

The biggest problem as many of you know was the crank pulley bolt, took me 3 days of every hour or so hitting it with
an impact wrench, no joy. A guy came by with a 3/4" impact wrench, only managed to break a socket. So I made
a pin wrench to hold the pulley, using the jack stand method I managed to break 2 more sockets.
All the while I've been using every penetrating oil I could get.
So I made a socket and extension, as you can see still no joy, i's been 7 to 10 days and I'm beginning to
think if anything happens it will be the bolt head twisting off, all though I had done this before I tried it again, I smacked
the end of the extension with a 2 pound hammer 5 or 6 times and it came loose, surprised the hell out of me.

These aren't impact sockets but only one was busted with an impact wrench.

Incredible how tight that bolt will get aint it.

So there is a freeze plug back there good find!

Thats crazy.

so how much ft/lbs is that. Your body weight X 8.8 ft = ???
Could be around 1600ft/lbs you put on that bolt by standing on it.
