View Full Version : better gas mileage

My 89 LXi gets pretty good gas mileage. I usually have to fill it up every 8 days, possibly 9. I've got a good 1 hour drive to school and then coming back. If I didn't drive that much I'm sure I would be filling it up less often. What can I do to the car to get better fuel mileage. I understand tweakin a car to get performance and style from it, but I don't hear people talking better fuel mileage. What are your thoughts. With gas prices going up I would rather get better gas mileage than top end.

performance filter may help a little.

run 35-40psi in your tires, use a clean air filter, drive like an egg is between your foot and the gas pedal and you don't want to crack it, have good and well greased wheel bearings on all four corners.

Drag increases at higher speeds. You get the best mileage going as slow as you can in top gear. Of course no one drives like that, but if you go 60 instead of 70 for example, you'll notice a difference (like drafting, but safer).

What mi/gal are you getting now? I get about 33 mi/gal with about half highway miles this time of year.

I get really good highway miles. (33-35miles) In town is like (20-24miles)

That thing about the speed is true. When I took long road trips between 60 and 65 miles per hour I would get near 35 mpg. Now with the reformulated gas (lower energy content) and my in town/75mph combined highway driving my gas mileage is considerably lower than that.

are you people nuts, running anything above 30psi = danger, bad for your tires.
Honda recomends 26 all the way around.
i run 28psi. when it is hot it becomes 32psi.

i run 32psi all around at all times. works wonders for me. ive run with lower psi and i notice a drag with the car.

different tires need different pressure. some tires are designed for 32psi while some others are designed for less. it depends on the tire and mainly the shape. check the sidewall of your tires if you dont know what to run. you should be noticing some uneven wear on your tires if they are over or under inflated.

Well, I just run at whatever psi it says on the tires. Anyhow, I've set my timing to where my car is slow ass hell, but I get really good gas mileage. I'm still doing 450 miles with a full tank both highway and city driving with my 89 LX-i coupe.

The pressure marked on the tire sidewall is the maximum safe pressure designed for the tire. The Honda sticker says 26 psi recommended; my tires are safe to 44 psi. I keep them between 30 and 32 as a compromise between mileage, ride, and sidewall roll over. I do about 400 miles on a tank, but with a broken low fuel indicator, I'm hesitant to try for any farther.

What performance filter would you reccomend? How much do they cost? you know the usual questions. thanks for the replies, as for how many mi/gal i get, i dont know. i forgot how you figure that up.

www.discountconverter.com - hi flo cat
www.ebay.com - civic short ram intake
www.your-local-exhaust-shop.com - 2.25 inch cat back with a performance muffler

the converter is about 100 bucks, the intake can be had for 50 bucks or so, and the pipe and muffler should be around 150 bucks

this setup with make your car much quicker and get way better mileage... a well breathing engine runs more efficient and uses less fuel to get goin

Question for DX hatch: which cat configuration does the 3g use? (i.e. 2-way,3-way,air) My SE-i has dual exhaust but I think the dual is all behind the cat. Is a 2.25" pipe still the way to go if I've got dual exhaust?

Thanks for the info. I'm a performance newbie.

Drive down near the speed limit.

Auto tranny: Adjust your throttle-tranny cable

Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you while keeping an eye ahead on traffic, so that you use your brakes as little as possible.

Let off the gas early when approaching an intersection.

Have your car gain speed going down a hill... then let your car loose some speed when cresting a hill.

Run your cold tire pressure +20% over what the owner's manual says, as long as it doesn't exceed what's on the sidewall.

Take all the junk you don't need out of your car to reduce weight.

hey monkey boy... just get a UNIVERSAL cat with NO TUBES COMING OUT

and if you have or want duals, i would get a hi flow 2 inch cat and 2 inch pipes bent to the back... or even run twin cats... y pipe behind the header, cats, then run twin pipes with dual mufflers out the back... nice stainless BOMB mufflers can be had for 100 bucks a pair on ebay...

PM me if you have any specific questions

wtf???
hey you fellas, how big are your tanks?
some punk on here thinks he can get 720km out of a 60L tank, he's gotta be joking!!!
Everyone put your mileage in km/Litre or Miles/Gallon and could someone please post the conversions....
THERE'S TOO MUCH BS!!!!

I get approximately, 10km per litre or 10L/100km
Sometimes more, sometimes less, depends on how I drive.

ACCORD EX
03-19-2003, 07:06 AM
MILES per GALON X 0.425 = KM per Liter
MILE = 1.6 KM
galon = 3.7 Liters

enjoy ! :D

27MPG, all highway, all above 80MPH. Did I mention this is without any exhaust after the flex pipe or in need of a tuneup? :-P
