Hi all, I am new to the forums and this is my first post. I seem to be having a problem with my 1989 Accord LX. When I go to start my car from a cold start the car idles rough and at a pretty low RPM and it smells like unburnt gas coming out of the exhaust. I am suspect that its an issue with automatic choke because if I open the choke with my finger it will idle fine. But once the car warms up the car runs fine. I have also noticed that the car is getting pretty horrible fuel mileage Ive calculated between 10-12 MPG which is not even close to the fuel mileage rating and it has never been this bad. I just did a full tune up on the car as well to try and fix this issue including spark plugs, thermostat, coolant flush, alternator and front brakes. The car only has 37k original miles on it......yes 37k. All help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not real up on the carbs but it sounds like you have a problem in the choke mechanism. Download the 89 USDM manual (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vtyhl48z5uftmt1/AAA0VFYqWyfZ35Nvudl0xk_Oa?dl=0), review the operation of the system and follow the diagnostic guides starting on p. 11-33. Most likely you have a vacuum leak.

Thanks for the response what is the best way to test for a vacuum leak?
