Yesterday, my SE-i spent the day at the muffler shop. I had my DC Sports headers installed, and had a custom CAI made. The owner of the shop was very interested in the possibility of a group buy on the CAI's if anyone on this board likes what they see under my hood. He said he would use mine as a template to make the others. Just so you all know mine being the prototype was more expensive about $150 not including the Bypass valve $44.95 and the K&N filter $35.00. I was thinking about something though, the Civic intake that guys have been buying and cutting to fit could be used and then only the piping to bumper well would have to be made possibly for only $60 to $75 bucks.

Here are pics, I'll let you guys be the judges...

Holy shit bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's tight! We already talked about it and I will defenitely go for it!

you're engine bay is looking very very very nice! but I'm defenitely loving the CAI. Can I have one for this weekend???? Maybe we can meet somewhere since we don't live that far from eachother............ what do you say???

So, how much is it for everything together and ready to install? I see that you guys cut a hole where the battery was........

How do you like the difference with the DC headers on??? I still love mines :D

Thats a nice paint job you have on your valve cover and tower bar.

Hey I really like you color tie in between the strut tower bar and the valve cover. And who ever did your CAI did a really nice job, it look's like a big company made it, not a shop.

Unfortunately, CAI's are a part that I think members can't see paying extra for, even though their selling themselve's short with the short rams that will not offer as much power gains as a true CAI.

Jim, your right!!!! Most members may not want to put out that kind of money for a true CAI but for the few that may be willing to do so the shop IM dealing with would be VERY happy to make them up for a group sale. Plus the possabilities of converting a Civic intake from Ebay $20 to a CAI for maybe $60 to 75 could be a cheaper option...

Im going to call the shop this afternoon and try to confirm a bottom line price for a group buy on the full CAI. I'll post some number later on tonight when i get back home from my errands...

Hey did you spray your inake pipe with a about 3-10 coats of heat coating??? looks nice...i want your valve cover! i need mine painted red...

Scott, No I didn't treat the inside of the intake piping with ceramic paint yet. I am going to monitor the air temp entering the TB with a indoor/outdoor thermometer sensor to see if it is needed. After this week i'll have a good idea wether or not i'll have to paint the inside...

my question is can we get them, if so does that place have a webite address. I wouldnt mind getting that CAI, but is it any better than the OPM one? & can they make one that is silver coated? My question is, does anybody know of a place to get a new valve cover because my Accord is black & it gos with the theme of my car.

i like the idea of true cold air like that, but what i don't like is the idea of removing the fender lining or bumper or whatever to clean the filter. if it wasn't a daily driver i would be real willing to work on something like that.

and where in New Jersey to do you live?

LOOKS really good dude............How much HP u have now?? im guessin 140-150??

turfnnsurf
02-04-2003, 08:14 PM
Grant, Im in the Trenton area. Also to clean the filter only takes one bolt that i have to remove from the lower wheel well skirt and then the skirt folds back out of the way for me to take the filter off and clean it.. maybe 20 minute job at the most...

JDM, i wouldn't say i have that much HP even at the flywheel, I know it sure feels a helluva lot stronger from 0 to 80!!!

He has 100 stock hp at the wheels, so he's probably got about 105 or 107. Just helps through the entire powerband you see.

Grant2k
02-04-2003, 09:20 PM
but considering how many miles most 3geez have on them he's probably doing about 90 at the wheels. which isn't bad.

turfnnsurf
02-04-2003, 10:13 PM
Grant, I hope I have a little more than 90 to the wheels since I added the headers and CAI because of the following:

2002 Mitsubishi mirage LS: 1.8L I4 111hp/5500rpm 116ft-lb/4500rpm 2300lbs and 13,000 miles
Take 20% loss for automatic you get 89hp....

1989 Accord SE-i coupe: 2.0L I4 122hp/5500rpm 118ft-lb/3600rpm 2750lbs and 120,000 miles
Take 20% loss for automatic you get 98hp.... 450lbs heavier AND ad 14 yrs of wear and tear and 120,000 miles, and it's more like 90hp like You say...

NOW for the fun part!!!! My best friend's wife owns the above Mirage and he and I decided to see how my car and the Mirage would fair in a race. The Mirage only had a short ram intake installed at the time and I only had my short ram intake and 2.25" exhaust and hi-flow cat done. The end result was that I stayed EVEN with him from 0 to 90 before we ran out of road wide enough for two cars.
Bottom line: Our 3G's were built damn tough to take 14 yrs+ of beating and still hold their own on the road.. I would say that now he doesn't have a chance against me with my headers and True CAI installed!!!!!

im very VERY interested in that CAI prospect specially the modding the civic one so ti would be cheaper...the less money the better...but it would soo be worth $75..i would def pay that...i didnt even think it was possible without all that hassle for the homemade one..i didnt even think of a muffler shop doing one

Grant2k

90 was a bit underestimating, but here is the post that made me think that low. i know i would be happy if my car made 90, which i know it doesn't, but mines is carbed and has 190,000 miles.

so what about that shop making the cold air intakes?...ill go for around $75 if its possible

turfnnsurf
02-06-2003, 10:17 PM
Kyoichi,

I'll have to let you know about the price for the lower part of the CAI. Hopefully it will be around $75 for just that part.. Question?? Do you already have the modified Civic intake now??

Mike's89AccordLX

Where did you buy the air bypass valve? I wonder if it will decrease the airflow? I have one of those K&N precharger filter wraps that fits over the cone filter like a sock. I was told it repels water and dirt so I may not need the air bypass valve. How much did it cost for the valve too?

turfnnsurf
02-06-2003, 10:37 PM
the Valve i got at a local Speed shop and cost the same as buying it online about $45.. Don't trust the precharger if you drive where there are heavy downpoors or large puddles to drive through... It does not decrease air flow it just allows air to enter the intake closer to the Throttle Body if the filter should suck up water from a big puddle. That way there is no vaccum to pull the water all the way into the engine.. However under normal and dry conditions it just lets the Cold AIR blow right by it to the TB..

Hope that explains it better.. If you want to know more goto http://www.aempower.com/induction.htm

yooo, how bout one for a 90 lude? and what did you use to paint your valve cover?

turfnnsurf
02-10-2003, 06:48 AM
A 90 Lude would be almost the same as our accords but you'll still have to move the battery to run the CAI piping to the bumper.. As for the paint i used for the Valve cover here is the link to Dupli-color and the paint i used. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html

CAR LOOKS GREAT ! u SHOULD DO WHOLE LOWER GRILL W/ MESH AND HIDE FOGS BEHIND IT,ALSO SAND HIGH SPOTS AND HONDA LOGO ON VALVE COVER,IT GIVES IT A MORE PROFESSIONAL LOOK.THATS JUST MY OPINION,LOOKS GOOD!

Kevin,

I agree about the valve cover and polishing the stripes and Honda logo.. That is in the works for the next VC i do. Once it gets a little warmer here im headed to the junkyard for a spare VC to work on... I thought about doing the center grill with mesh but wasn't sure about setting the driving lights behind the mesh.. I have extra gutter guard so i could experiment i guess...

what junk yard do you go to? i can't find one around here that will let you walk around. Cozy Bros. in Clinton does sometimes i hear.

02-11-2003, 10:56 AM
Here in Trenton there is a place called "ACRES" they let you walk thru. Also just over the river in PA there are two places called "you pull it's" both let you walk in and pull what ever you can off of the cars...

Grant2k
02-11-2003, 10:57 AM
what are the names. that's only like an hour south of me, and for a you-pull-it yard i would drive that far.

I'll have to PM or E-mail you with the names and addresses so you can look them up at mapquest.. i'll get there by he end of the week and then let you know....
