now that i have your attention.....

I was thinking about how to do a CAI for a stock carb with out the big expensive webbers, ect ect......

1) remove the stock (or k&n filter from carb air box
2) disconnect intake ducting into the carb air box....
3) Where the red is in the pic...run a pipe down with cone filter to the bumper....like normal CAI....remove batt., whatever....

Just a thought....:stick: Its easier and cheaper then a normal CAI or EFI conversion..

think it would work?
lemme know what ya think....

that will work... but its soooo huge inside there it will almost be useless... maybe if you cut the driver side off adn made the box a bit smaller adn welded it up... maybe then...

just build a little box outta tin!

if you wanted to make a really cheap one just take out the stock filter, put the lid on how its supposed to be, buy a cone filter, chop the end off of the flexi tube that comes off the intake, then put the cone filter on it.

I was planning on reducing the4 space in the air box---but wouldnt the pipe running down to the bumper force air in better then a short ram air tube? plus colder air....

yea it will work but u need to make the space in the air box smaller or else the air will just circle around in the air box and be hard for the carb to suck it in, and will hurt power.

If we could find someone to make some carb adaptors we could acutally buy a fuel injected cold air intake with cone filter on the end. that would really help!

Your will also need to plug the hot air intake pipe that runs to your exasut manifold or eles you risk damaging your engine from dirt/oil/ being sucked up from there.

So with all sed and done...are we looking at decent power gains? im not talking 30 hp...i got stickers for that...hahahaha....but like 3-7+ ??

Well I think everyone with a carb should buy a Weber. But why don't you just put on a hoodscoop and make a little box out of tin that fits around the carb.

Here's my idea, now that it has gestated a little bit. Since the airbox is too big how about dividing the chamber with vertical metal pieces. The pieces must have flaps to screw on the airbox where you drilled holes. Use rubber gasket between the joints. Basically make a path from the carb hole to the box opening. Just make sure its cross sectional area is not significantly different from whatever pipe with a cone filter you attach. As said, plug the hot air return. There are things that may be removed if they are in the way. I dont know if the lid would be secure enough with just the side clamps and the bolt mounts removed. That may not be necessary for the faint hearted. If rubber cant be used tight "closed cell" foam secured very well would help cover gaps.

where did you get that air box pic from?

that looks like a nice cheap alternative...

awsome pic man!!! thats exactly what i was thinking!! and a perfect diagram...nice job man.

Now....back to my orriginal proposal....

with the air box size *reduced* ...woulc you get decent performance upgrades from a CAI? or ram air? cheeper then welding...and from the one welded ram air i saw on a carb (i dont know whos) it looked kinda...odd....

anywyas...would it work? or be worth it? i was thinking CAI....or ram with hood sccoop....any suggestions?

I got the picture from the shop manual. Page 11-20. I had to touch it up in photoshop to remove the page bleed grime and the freakin arrows that labelled everything.
