it's taken a long long time, but i got most of it done and here are the pictures. i won't put them all here but if you go to my cardomain page at www.cardomain.com/id/grant2k than you can see them with better desriptions.

this is the car before. you can see filler from some kind of repair done before i owned the car, and the bumper has already been removed.

here is the panel that i bought and what it covers. everybody was asking about this.

This is a picture of how much we trimmed the panel. i took the picture from a stool because i am short.

Much rust around the gas filler.

This is a good one after we cleaned and we ready to start cutting. Look at those Neuspeeds.

Here it is after we cut away the rust and primed the exposed metal with rustproofing. i drove around like this for weeks.

My dad made this peice out of galvanized steel to go around the gas filler.

Finally, bonded and riveted in place. The rivets act like clamps while it dries and will get ground off later.

Looks great! Taking your time and doing it right really pays off in the end, huh? Are those the panels from Mill Supply Co? (www.rustrepair.com). I need to get some too

Was any welding involved? Or just the rivets?

EDIT: Oops...I just reread through all your pics and answered both of my questions! :lol

Hey Grant, I did not know that your car's cancer was so advance. When I saw it at the Englishtown Meeting in NJ, it did not look like that; or perhaps I did not pay that much of attention.

I have to give you A LOT OF props for doing what you're doing to your car man. If it would of be me, I would of probably sold the car and get me another 3g in better shape. I just don't have the patience nor the time to do all that work to my car. It's cool that your pops is helping you out too; that would give you guys some quality time together. Nice job dude! :super:

PS. Would it be ready for the NJ meet on the 22nd??

Where did you buy those? That seems easier to repair rust when you have such a thing.

thanks a lot guys.

87accord- go to "add/adit pages" in the member lobby. once you get the hang of cardomain it's easy.

Maurice- when you saw the car, there was some filler and a bit more metal that not long after began to fall off and more rust was showing through than ever. it looked a bit better at Englishtown, but not much. I don't know if it will be painted for the 22nd, but it will be there.

carotman- i got the panel at www.rustrepair.com and the adhesive i beleive at www.autobodysupply.com. the panel was only $32 which was awsome, but the adhesive was $26 and the gun for it was $50! But i can tell you that adhesive is strong as all hell.

the panel is held on with the adhesive. the rivets were just used to pull the panel as close as possible to the car while the adhesive cured. they will get ground off later.

I forgot to ask...what did you use to rustproof the inside?

i just used Hammerite brand paint that turns "rust into a paintable surface." i put on a thick coat of it, and that stuff is tough. it has a rough "hammered" finish when it dries and it even stands up to road damage. you should wire brush the area first because you can't paint in onto scale, but if it's a solid area with just surface rust than the stuff works great.

i forgot to mention that i also filled any hollow cavities with Great Stuff expanding foam. i have used this before and it works super. just spray it into anyplace where water can get into and it seals it up. you can then cut, sand, paint it, whatever. on the other side of my car when i repaired it over a year ago i filled the whole cavity with Great Stuff, sanded and shaped it, Bondoed it, fiberglassed, and painted. it looks great and you can't really even tell there was rust on that side.

this is the ahesive that actually holds the panel on.

there is a crimping tool that does just that, but i didn't have access to one. i just pulled it as tight to the car as i could and will fill it in with a little bondo. in the end it probably will still have the a slight lip. that's not how i would have prefered to do it, but being on a budget and needing it done, plus doing it all in my garage, i did what i could.

Chubs, if i did that with caulk it would have fallen off in 5 minutes. this adhesive is HARSH STRONG stuff. i had it on my hands for more than a week after i was done doing putting the panel on. i considered caulk just for keeping water out, but the foam works better.
