Ok, I pretty much think the problem with my system is a frayed or otherwise messed up voice coil. I know theoreticly where the voice coil should be, but when I dismantled my sub I could find no way to get to it short of destroying the sub. So... if the voice coil is indeed the problem, would I then by screwed and have to buy a new sub / subs? Or is there some way I could fix it?

Do you still have a warranty? Even if the answer is "no" then I think you could send it back to the company to get fixed and it'd be cheaper than buying new...
