I've just got an 88 Accord SEi sedan.
The fuel gauge was reading full even with the car off and the battery disconnected.
I removed the sender unit, cleaned it, and tested it outside of the tank. Moving the float by hand I could manipulate the gauge. However, if I turned off the car the gauge would stay in the position it was last in. Same if I disconnected the battery.
I replaced the sender in the tank to test anyway, and it made no difference - the fuel gauge rose to full and stayed there again with the car off and battery disconnected.
I removed the unit again, sprayed the sockets with contact cleaner and sprayed and cleaned the ring around where the sender unit sealed to the tank. But still no change.
I'm at a bit of a loss and in need of help.
Where/how does the sender unit ground to the tank?
Why would the gauge not drop with the battery and sender unplugged?
Many thanks in advance!
