So, I've never owned a Honda and the car I have now is the oldest car I have ever owned.

I am driving a 87 Honda Accord LXi. It is in really good condition and only has a few small issues (hole in the muffler, motor mount, and the original deck has a tape stuck in it that I can't get out and can't use the radio because the tape is in the deck.). I really like the car and am glad I found this site because I really want to take great care of this awesome car, just as the other user did (130k original miles).

I plan to be harassing all of you and getting as much information as possible from you... So, sorry if I become annoying with stupid questions, but luckily, there is a board for just that :-).

Have a good one, and thanks for the site!

Hi All,

Just bought an 89 LXi Florida car with 132K on it. Car had been off the road for 8 years. Owner claimed he started it every 6 months. Don't think so, fuel line corroded along drivers floor, pumped some serious petrol with ignition on. Fixed fuel line with high pressure fuel line, started like it ran yesterday. A couple of ticks an then quiet and smooth. Left rear brake fused to drum, had to beat it apart. Did a "poor mans" brake job with 60 grit sandpaper so I could get it home. Just finished the brakes all around. Drums and rotors cleaned up fine, all new parts from there. Flushed the brake fluid all around, not pretty. Just need to clean the nests out of the heater circuit and give her a good cleaning. Oh yeah, new oil, tranny and radiator flush and she's like new. Surprised the auto trans survived the inactivity so well. Thank you guys for the tip on the code six problem. Located the temp sensor and found a brittle and broken wire. Did some surgery on the connector, added new pigtail to it and reinstalled. Still need to get right side headlight retract motor to work. Left works fine from both switches and both lamps work fine. Fuses are good so I am thinking relay or connector problem. Or motor (hope not). Glad I found you folks. Peace, Rick

Found the headlight retract problem. Removed the retract motor and found 2 broken wires coming from the top section of the motor. Soldered them back together, problem solved. Car still stinks from a rodent infestation. Removed the lower windshield cowl trim, looked like Hotel California in there! Spent the day scrubbing with ZEP orange cleaner, lots of of hose flushing. Getting better, still NOT there. The heater core is going to have to come out and be cleaned, pressure washed and deodorized. I will not be beaten by these little furry creatures. Car was parked for 7 or 8 years. Runs great, stinks like hell. Any ideas would be appreciated. Peace, Rick

Hello all!,
My name is Patrick. I just bought me an 88 accord LX (carb) for $500! Great deal except it keeps overheating. So far that's the only major thing I can find wrong with it. So, here is what I have replaced on it to try and fix the problem: thermostat and gasket, coolant temp sending unit, radiator, and 3 jugs of coolant and no results. I've checked the upper hose its fine, not the lower one yet, water pump is not making any noise, the end of the heater hose was bulged so I just snipped it and put it back on, the oil is still oil and it is not milky or has any coolant in it. When it overheats the fans do turn on so I now its not the fans, although the temp gauge on the dash seems to go back and forth from working to not working. I just recently completely drained the cooling system to put new coolant in it and when I did white smoke was coming out of the radiator! Don't know what that means. I also took out the thermostat to see if that would help but it didn't seem to, I checked the upper and lower hose for heat, the upper got hot but the lower did not. I was expecting it to get hot a good bit after the upper did but it did not. I also tried bleeding the system but I cannot get a steady stream of coolant to come out, it just spurts liquid then steam. I checked on youtube and all of those its coming out of the tailpipe and its due to a blown or leaking head gasket. Is that the same problem I am having? This was the first time it has spewed white smoke. Any help is greatly appreciated! I apologize in advance if I have left anything out. Tomorrow I am going to test the cooling system pressure to see if it is leaking. I saw that on youtube too. Thanks in advance everyone!

Watch the offset of the rims. Don't go too far from the standard +45 on our cars, your handling will suffer from it.
I think anything up to 10mm more to the outside of the car (= +35) will be okay, and looks better!

welcome, the prelude b20a is the wrong swap. the b20 you want is the crv b20. correct me if i am wrong fellas.

87roach
02-08-2012, 09:45 PM
I'm pretty sure you'd need the different mounts for the crv b20?

Sure makes it more complicated when you have overlapping engine codes.. or very similar to at least.

89T
02-09-2012, 04:20 AM
so whitch b20 is needed? Just so I know.

A18A
02-09-2012, 04:28 AM
the "bolt-in" swap is a B20A, which only came in 3g accords or 2g preludes.

if someone has a b20a from a prelude it has to be a gold top. otherwise it will be the wrong engine & wont bolt in

89T
02-09-2012, 04:36 AM
So what b20 is everyone droping into their civic's?

obdriver6
02-10-2012, 10:01 AM
The CRV one!
2g prelude & 3g accord: JDM B20A Gold top
3g prelude: B20A WRONG ENGINE!!!!
CRV: B20B or B20Z, needs innovative mounts.

it might be a good idea to introduce yourself first in this section, since thats what it's for, then study the other sections of the forum specifically for your car, as far as the engine put up a post in wanted, people here usually at least like an introduction, people here are pretty decent and will be glad to help you, but please post in the right section

Hey everyone, new here at 3geez. I don't even have enough posts to put up a picture. hahaha. Anyways, i got a 1989 prelude 2.0s. Its the "naturally aspirated" version of the prelude. I know that not many people are fond of this version but its what I got and it runs pretty good so thats what i am working with. Hahaha. I got with 149K miles and it has around 165K right now. I used to have a 89 accord SEi, so I know that the fuel injected is worlds better than what i have now. But like i said its what i got now so its what i'm playing with. :)
Just want to say whats up to all you 3geez, WHATS UP!!!!!! I'm gonna try to post more stuff so I can get more involved. I want to find parts for my car which are getting harder to find. thanks guys!!!

Hi there everyone!!!
Sarah here! From Phoenix, AZ.
I have a white 1989 Accord LX-i 4-door automatic. Her name is TankGirl! Such a sick ass ride:rockon:....if only she were in better shape at the moment.

Just had the head gaskets done in March this year because there was water in there.
She has a crack in the intake coupler. It used to be a soft squishy silicone/rubbery-type material, but is now hard and brittle/cracking from this Phoenix heat. I took the coupler and clamps off last night only to find out (today) that the part has been discontinued and I am going to have to redneck-rig something to get her going again. :dunno:
She also has lots of hoses and tubing that is old and needs to be replaced.

Previous owner didn't treat her well! SOOO I WILL BE USING THIS FORUM TO MY FULL ADVANTAGE!

Hello all, brand new here just found the forums. I have had my 3 for about 6 months now I am a truck driver so I have the funds just not lots of time. She is an 88 accord LX-i with an A20A3 W/auto 4 door sedan with mint interior. My goal is to make one heck of a sleeper out of this car going to fix the minimal cancer I have on the body (fender wheels) and just have some fun. Will be lurking and posting were needed to get all help I can and maybe offering help if I can.

Hello all! I'm brand new to the forums here. Been browsing but this is my first post. I'm a high school student and my accord is my first car. I have a 1989 Honda Accord DX with a 5-Spd. transmisson and the A20A1 engine block. Its carbed, which is kind of a bummer but its a dream and i love it. Howdy all,

I just bought my first Prelude (note the use of the word "first") last night. It's a black 1991 Si that had 4ws grafted onto it by the guy I bought it from. It has the B20A5 engine (he said it was rebuilt but I can smell the oil it's burning), and there's 261xxx on the chassis.

I only drove it from his house to mine last night but enjoyed every minute of it. I'm hooked. What a nice-riding, responsive car! it's just a sweetheart.

I'm going to be reading everything I can on these cars - I already read half the Chilton's manual this morning - and looking for advice from you experts on what to check up on, what to maintain and/or improve on the car.

I don't have any pics it of my own, but I downloaded the ones from the Craigslist ad and will be posting them to Photobucket and linking them here RSN (Real Soon Now).

Thought I would drop in and introduce myself. My name is Jay and I just brought my first Honda home from the Oregon coast. It was not running when I purchased it and that's how I found this forum, searching for issues with fuel delivery. Well after a new main relay, battery, alternator and set of tires, she's cruising like champ. I took it to my mechanic for a safety inspection, since its mainly for my new drivers in the house (18, 16, 15 year olds). He made me a list of items I should be replacing soon, so I am thankful that I found this wealth of information.

Hi All - I'm Ryan and I just bought an 89 LX 4 door. 266k miles. New head gasket, cam, valves, fuel pump, timing belt, water pump, radiator, distributor, and awesome 13" tires! Runs great and looks very good for being 25 years old. It is completely original and reminds me of how I fell in love with these cars when I was 11. Tell me why it steers better than any new car I've ever driven? I have owned a 92, 95, 03, and 10. None of them steered as good! This is my first carbed Accord (I drove an 88 carbed Prelude in high school and college) so I am going to put some work in to it. This car represents my journey to financial freedom. No car payments and I can restore it one part at a time.

Best info i found anywhere is on here so I'm excited. Used to have an 84 accord that i loved, was still running like a champ at 350k when i gave it away and missed it ever since. Stoked to get another 500$ wonder car!

Hello, just joined. Got an 89 LX, A/T and carbed.

Had a new thing happen yesterday. Car has been hard to start (read everything here I think) but headed out and a few miles from home it dies at a stop sign. won't restart. Will only run when the starter is engaged.
So, held the key to keep starter going and dropped it in gear and took off. Figuring I would then need a new starter and perhaps some wires if I could make it home without it catching fire. Went about 1/2 mile and had some momentum and released the key. It kept running. So weird.
Went to put new cap and rotor on and it has oil in it.

I love cars, don't get me wrong, but sometimes they frustrate the shit out of me!!!

I expect this forum to be like a counseling session!

I expect this forum to be like a counseling session!. There is a seal in the distributor to keep oil out and it sounds like you need a new one. I replaced the seal and Bering in my 86 and found it's not all that hard too do.

Got that fixed. Car will not stay running unless you keep starter engaged when you put it into gear. Also hard to start.
Got new plugs, cap & rotor. Didn't change a thing about how it starts.

In 40 years I have never had to hold the starter engaged and put car into gear and drive before being able to release the key so it will stay running.
Also changed both fuel filters.
Reading through all the FAQ and have seen similar issues but not this exact problem.

Really hoping someone out there can point me in the right direction.

Maybe a bad ignition switch?

Hey guys, I wanted to say thanks for all the info, I have been playing hell with my 88 but thanks to this site it's up and running again.
I have an 88 Lxi 5 speed sedan, my mom bought it a couple of years ago for like $300. She got a new car a few months ago and my trans went out in my truck so I picked it up from her and have been enjoying it. It has 220000 on it but the engine and trans are good still, I had a ground wire go bad and it caused the throttle cable to melt into the plastic where it goes through the firewall, it was a pain but it's good to go now. Still need to replace the vc gasket but have been working on getting 26 years worth of cooked on sludge off the motor first haha

Hi every on glad to join in on a awesome Honda forum. I have a 97 Honda Accord LX that's hard to get rid of. I let it sit for 8 mo. Never went out to start her to keep her awake. (Don't ask me why please) I'm unable to drive for the time being. I just kept walking past her. So now I'm possibly thinking bout selling, MAYBE because after hearing some of your comments I may not be ready to let her go. I've had her since 2003. After getting her started found out the serpentine belt, basically alternator was bad. Not bad huh! Woke up next morning something had leaked from underneath. Now i have a gas line or tank issue. If its the tank man. 230k miles. Dunno whats next. Mechanic says $150 labor and parts for altenator. But... that has to be fixed before finding out the leak cost. Im trying to sell it. How much Im money am i trying to put into. If i sell.

What's up y'all? Relative noob here. Done minor maintenence and repairs on an 88 Mazda 323, older explorers, rodeo, s10, and don't even get me started telling Saab stories...Just bought an 89 Accord DX hatchback (carbed, 5 speed manual) with 224k miles for $1k on Friday 12/16. I love it but it has already been teaching me some lessons. Long story short, after about 5 starts, had no start no crank issues but still had lights, radio, etc. Stood in the Oriley's parking lot with a flashlight soaking wet in freezing rain putting in a new starter after replacing a bad battery. Still got a no start no crank. Read around on this forum and saw people talking about "blue crayon" in the floorboard. Lo and behold, the stopper for the clutch saftey switch was missing. Bypass the switch and for a brief second I heard the starter engage and then total power loss. No lights nothing. Fiddle with the battery cable and I get power back but still no start no crank. Next step is replacing the 28 year old battery cable. I'm thinking this has got to be the issue. Spent $200 dollars and a couple of hours on what likely could have been fixed with a $15 dollar cable and a paper clip in less than 10 minutes. Story of my life.

Welcome and have fun! These cars have a lot to teach us. When they fail us we might think to just get rid of it depending what situation we're in, but considering it being a 30 year old car or older, stuff breaks and will break if we do not give it the attention it needs, sure it will fail. It makes us think and figure things out and even trying to find parts is like a treasure hunt. Being a carbed car is an adventure of its own.

Well here I am. Looking for a place with fun cars, and something about the Honda Accord (3rd gen) has been interesting. I found one locally with 208k miles that was fully running up till about a week before I bought it, for only 200. Has body damage, and hopefully just that. It did not appear to be leaking from what I could see though I could be wrong, as there was liquid on the tow truck but may have been there from their previous tow.

I really just want a place I can talk to other people who specialize in Honda's.

Specifically I have a 1989 Honda Accord ULX. My girlfriend on the other hand has an 87 Honda ULX. I'm going to be putting my carburetor on hers, as well as my tires and sending unit.

After fixing hers, I plan to get mine running but will be doing some searching before posting my questions. Always been a computer nerd, but computers got... too easy. Thought why not take on cars.

Any help is much appreciated, a lot of the links on here referencing this subject are expired! Feel free to follow my progress on Instagram as well @rhondathe88honda. Thanks!

Its not really expensive but more time consuming. It can be done in a week if you worked on it full time. Simply buy a FI parts car and swap everything over.
Intake manifold, engine wiring harness, ECU, add the fuel line, gas tank, fuse box are the basics but then while you are in there you will want to switch over things like the gauge cluster, front brakes, brake booster since the LXI is bigger and sway bar.

The things you'll need to buy are gaskets, coolant hoses, coolant, fuel filter, tune up items like a distributor, plugs, and wires.

The interior of the car will need to be gutted completely to get the extra fuel line in. The biggest tip i have is when you take something off, thread the bolt back into where it was so you don't have to keep track of them.

Hey everyone! Glad to be here. I joined the forum because I'm looking at an 88 accord LXI. It needs quite a bit of work, but the only thing I'm really concerned about is the passenger door won't open. Hopefully I'll find answers here :D

Not sure if this forum is active anymore, seems like it may have died in the past few years. I’m Kyle, nice to meet anyone that may still be here. I just picked up a beige 1985 Honda Accord LX with just over 60k miles. I’m the first person to drive it since 1995 and it was garage stored the entirety of its life so it’s in surprisingly great condition. Just joining this forum to find out any tips for modification or things to improve performance. Right now I’m having an awfully hard time locating suspension parts.

Looks pretty active to me

What suspension parts are you trying to find? We have lists of these things.

Yeah me too. Ksport is the only coilover you can bank on right now and they have to custom make it. Mine is being worked on now. Go through their website. I also hear people like to use stock integra and prelude suspension coilovers. For control arms, you can get some parts through amazon, some through autozone and other parts retailers but the rear lower control arms, well, just get the poly bushing replacement kits and let a shop press those in and hope your stock arms arent bent. You can manage the front end easily enough. Stabilizer bar bushings are around , for now. But you need to utilize ebay, amazon and parts retailers at all the same time, constantly double check part numbers with multiple stores. I like to use autozone to identify a correct part for its pictures and then get as many options based around that as I can. Its actually not so bad right now. Ive been able to get mostly anything I need as long as im only looking for stock oem replacement parts. If you wont go for 1k coilovers or more, then the kyb shocks are good. Youll need to get springs though and dont try to go with a stiffer spring or custom spring on that kyb shock. Also, I did a lot of research on all the springs you can buy for the car through autozone and amazon and ebay. The spring rates for Moog springs and the rates for the generic autozone spring are the same. Any OEM replacement spring you will buy for this car will be the same spring rate. Stock. Which is 279 in/lbs front 170 in/lbs rear. My ksports kontrol series will be 12k 6.9k Its a little over double the stock at 5k front 3k rear. If you manage to find some custom spring for that car, dont really go above my spring rate for the street. To be honest, even that rate is a bit high but its the only choice we have without buying overseas and taking risks. Keep the spring rate balances the same. I found a sway bar upgrade kit and i didnt buy it...it was a set of thicker bars for the front and rear. GET THOSE if you find any. So far, I have bought for the front end on amazon alone, tie rods, upper and lower arms, stablizer bushings and all the arms had the new bushings already pressed in. For the rear end, im just getting the replacement bushings for the stock control arms. Its all you can find anyway. You can get rear stabilizer bar bushings but they are harder to find for my 3door hatch. Dont make the mistake I did, and put a bunch of parts of a wish list for 6 months. I came back and they were all sold out and not available since. Remember Rock Auto has a HORDE of parts and sometimes they are ones you gotta go through. Not just Rock Auto, but other start up buisnesses that stockpile parts from junkyards are everywhere which is why we are running out of cores for autozone and other companys to reman for us. They are just sitting in peoples warehouses, waiting for someone to call and order it. No online presence really, no advertising and so , you gotta hunt them down. State by state, junkyard by junkyard. I even like to call the local shops, get someone smart on the phone, a master tech who is plugged into the area, and use those people for connections. I called some random electrical shop that rebuilds starters and talked my way to another shop, that lead me to my current guy , who can get anything I need locally. Machine shop connections, transmission shop connections, upholstry connections. Thats your best bet. Sound desperate, and get on the phone and talk to human beings. Shops with commercial accounts can call the suppliers and not autozone, and get the low down on core supply and they can push options for you autozone or orielys or advance auto cant. They have people on the inside , in the supplier chain end of things. Even if that supplier is out, if they have a good relationship personally with the shop that is calling, they will go beyond their own supply and look for you too.
