View Full Version : The Cat and O2 Sensors Really Should Last the Life of the Car

My area of Texas reinstated emission testing this year. For cars like ours they have to run them on a dyno while the thing is hooked up with the tailpipe probe.

My old car with 203,500 miles and its original cat and O2 sensors passed with flying colors. I believe I have seen others on here saying the same thing.

The guy doing the testing said that this vintage of O2 sensor really should last for life. If you maintain the car properly you should pretty much never have to replace these parts.

Honda recommends you change the O2 sensor every 50K

For this car? I have both the factory service manual and the owners manual and I don't remember reading anything like that. Unless it's not working correctly I'd leave mine alone.

Yeah, for our car. I remember reading it somewhere. I wouldnt change the sensor unless it didnt work.

I, too, have the factory service manual which gives no such interval for changing the O2 sensors. My local Honda dealer told me the same thing and I actually think they have a good shop.

Unless your ECU tells you they are bad then leave them alone.

My O2 sensors have been through 253K miles and they're still functioning properly. I wouldn't recommend messing with it if it's still working. Sometimes you gotta say "screw what the book says."

ok, I found it. BOSCH recommends that you change them every 50K

Maybe BOSCH was referring to those who do not know how to care for their cars and rely heavily on mechanics to do the maintaining.

I guess so. also keep in mind that BOSCH manufactures o2 sensors. so the more that people replace them, the more money they make.

Yeah but Denso makes our o2 sensors, if they arent bad leave them alone. I did see a cat with 228k miles from an 87 lx and it was perfectly intact, all of the cat material was still there and undamaged
