Replacing ignitor with a GM HEI unit

I originally made a post about the Bosch 124 ignitor, but after a lot of research and looking at configurations of the 2 I decided the 4 wire HEI was the better option and I figured out how it is wired up.

Not only will the HEI ignitor never cease to exist, replacement units are reliable and very easy to find. The HEI is a very common aftermarket solution also. This also opens up the ability to use ignition controller ecus with a 7 or 8 pin HEI module to control dwell and advance timing electronically, but we won't get into that because most controllers would support a distributorless system.

Thank you for sharing this post and doing the actual research on it. These are the long term solutions to keep our vintage cars running for a long-time to come. I wish you should also post this on FB 3geez group, and the 2 / 3 gen Prelude groups, as they are reaching bigger crowds. Distributor problems are common and parts harder to come by as time goes.
Next best thing would be someone actually trying this and being able to confirm it works.
So, kudos on this one, keep that up [emoji854].

Yeah I always thought with the 8 pin you could have timing control which would be cool retro fit on our cars.

Next step is finding a cheap timing controller... speeduino is one, but its more than we need and it supports distributorless. We only need a single channel. However, keeping the distributor does reduce cost even though speeduinos and megajolts are very cheap, there are a lot more parts, the speeduino can probably just run it like a twin cylinder engine with wasted spark, firing every time it sees a VR pulse, it would at least open up timing tables.
7 pin and 8 pins are the same, just a 7 pin grounds through the screw hole like our factory one, the 8 pin grounds on a pin in the 4 pin connector.
