View Full Version : A new fun noise

So this noise started a few days ago. I'm 90% certain it's the clutch again but wanted to get different opinions.
This video is not me, not my car. It does however make the same exact noise.

One other thing I noticed; if you sit with the engine off, clutch in and push the car, you can feel a bump through the pedal, like a quick dragging of something.
I have gone through and adjusted the clutch cable up and down and it doesn't change the noise.
It has also started missing 3rd, not grinding or anything but it's not smooth, like I have to push to neutral and then push back into 3rd. The shift linkage looks ok but once I get into tearing it apart, I'll look closer at it.

Side note: dumped oil out to check for sparklies, oil was clean.

Sounds like a trow out bearing, or grease on the disc. You might have broke the spring around the 3rd gear syncro, happened to Snooz's 5th, mine is probably boofed too. 3g trans are not long for this world.

I'll add those to the list of things to check once I get it apart. Ordered a new clutch set and some other random misc stuff that's been needing attention. Just waiting on parts to get in.

It shifts into 3rd just fine but it's the action of going from 2 to 3 that feels like it's off somehow like it doesn't line up right. Doesn't happen all the time either.
I'll take the case off the trans once I get it out though just to check.

Taking the trans apart is the best course of action. I don't thing the spring breaking stops it from going into gear, but its been known to get eaten by the gears and you have a greasy XL paperweight

If it's like mine, then the clutch disk itself could be coming apart.

I just saw what you wrote in the How-to thread about the exedy disc... that's what's in mine right now. I wonder if it's a failing of that manufacturer.
Granted, I slapped it in there in an emergency without doing the proper resurfacing and such so I expected it to eventually crap out.
I got the new set in today which is a complete set (plate, disc, bearing) so we'll see how it holds up. Perfection clutch is the brand. Interestingly it has the rubber bits instead of springs in the disc so that's different.
Going to do it right this time since I have the time to do it and have the flywheel resurfaced and all that.
It's getting torn apart tomorrow so I'll find out if it even is the clutch for sure, could be something much worse.

Transmission out, drained the oil out of it and it looks like it just came out of the bottle. Clean as a whistle, no sparklies or anything so just by that, eliminates the transmission being the noise culprit. I'll probably still take the case off though just to check the spring(s).

Sounds like clutch and throwout bearing issues to me.

Rust...? it... rusted? da fuck... car doesn't sit for more than a few days at a time. I mean I get stuff like rotors can surface rust in a day but a clutch?

Last pic it's hard to see but there are small hot spots all around the pressure plate.

We have a place in town I got my clutch from and the flywheel resurfaced. It's called Fort Wayne Clutch. If they don't have anything off the shelf they can make a custom clutch. I'd trust them to give you good information at least I also have 30,000 miles on my clutch and I drive very hard on it without any issues. I know your not here in town but it would cost only about $25 for shipping probably.

I appreciate it but there are a few places in town that do clutch work. All I need now is to have the flywheel done, went ahead and got a whole new set (plate, disc, bearing).

New studs in, they're rock solid now.

Also got around to cutting off the pipe extensions off the header. Welded a bolt to them lol. welded the slip joints up too. Welds are dirty but all I got is a $100 harbor freight stick welder haha

side note, that's not a crack on the header pipe, it was a hair.

Back up and running again!
Took a while cause we went on vacation the week after it broke so it sat on jackstands for a bit untouched.
Only issue is a coolant leak at the thermostat but I expected it since the replacement I had, the rubber seal was old and dry.
Its nice not having exhaust leaks. Lmao.
Oh and I got the power steering lines into the speed sensor in the correct order this time. Win!
I'm also a derp cause when I took it around the neighborhood for a shakedown, got home and remembered I had only finger tightened the lug nuts. Woops!
