Has anyone changed their upper ball joints? how hard was it to do and do you think i really need a hoist to do it or can this be done on jacks? I am replacing the whole control arm, should I also buy the bushings and the big long bolt you think?

Just use jack stands.
Replace the bushings if it's worn. The long bolt doesn't have to be replaced.

Make sure you buy the ball joint assembly... not just the joint... the assembly has the whole arm on it... you dont want to have to deal with pressing the new one into the old arm.

yeah accord upper ball joints are sold as a whole arm !
prelude's ( which fit our cars ) sold seperately !
if you want to do a conversion to prelude arms ! check the how to 's !

I would suggest to do the conversion to prelude arms just because if you buy the prelude arms used and buy new ball joints and bushings for them they will still be at least $20 less then the upper ball joint assembly for the accord. I did the upper arm installation in less then 20 minutes per side, and this is the first honda I have ever worked on so I would say its worth doing it yourself, I just put jackstands supporting the front frame and held the lower ball joint up with a floor jack.

I am able to buy parts at dealer cost; new. The upper control arm with the ball joint is only going to cost me about $50 (Canadian). If I can do this on jacks that is going to save me alot of money, seeing that I'm not really a grease monkey, and my friend can do it then.

I have access to a lift. Would it be easier to do the prelude arm conversion and change the ball joints on the lift or will I end up damaging something?

It's easy as hell! I took the rear drivers side off at the junkyard. I'm paying someone to install it though since I don't have experience with brakes. I need to have the pads and cylinders transferred from the one I have now to the one I pulled from the junkyard.

I went to the junkyard today and they wanted to charge me 90 bucks for the Prelude arms. I walked away from them. That seems really damn high. How much has anyone else been charged for them?

That is really high steve, especially considering i paid $50 for the upper stock replacement brand new (this is canadian pricing, but I work for a dealer....so this is dealer pricing) did you buy two??

If I get you the money, will you sell me some?

I didn't buy them. I went out after he told me that to find some knick knacks for my car and I found coupe tails and he wanted 80 for them. I told him I was putting them back. That place used to be really good with prices but they've gone way up over the past year.

Ridered, how much do you think you could get prelude upper arms for? I'll pay the cost, shipping, and a little extra for your trouble if the price is right.

there is one problem with getting you all parts real cheap....I work for a bike dealer and slide these parts through under the wire. as long as i don't buy the whole car in parts they (Honda Canada) don't even notice cause it comes from the same warehouse as the bike parts. If they figure out i'm buying a lot of parts for cars i will get my dealership in a lot of crap. the other prob is that if my employer finds out i'm buying parts all the time there's going to be a lot of questions, and i'll lose my employee discount. sorry dudes....:(
