my gas gauge is a little off i calculated 6 extra gallons of gas when the needle is on e. and i have never seen my gas light come on. i dont know if it even works. i just wanted to know if there was a way to test my gas light without having to go too low on gas.

How many gallons does your tank have or what do you think it has. I have no idea how much they have. I assumed a 13 gallon tank b/c when at "E" I can fill it like 12.4 or 12.5 gallons.

you know that does sound right a 12 gallon tank but i thought that the manual said 16.9 i also have a lx

Yeah its supposed to be 16.9 but I was on the freeway once running out of gas, sputtering for 5 miles on fumes and rolled off the offramp into a gas station and it took only 14.

Holy crap. You sure that isn't liters? I thought a 13 gallon tank would be kind of a weird number. No wonder I have never had the gas light come on. Can anyone confirm this? Ahh hell I'll call honda, I checked the haynes and couldn't find it.

I think you would have to take the guage cluster off and check the bulb, I dont know of any other way.

Mike's89, it isnt a 13 gallon tank. This car has been filled up with more than 13 gallons several times!

It's 15.9 US gal, 13.2 lmp gal (whatever that one means, I don't know). It says this right on the back of the owners manual

I know that but we are questioning it. I mean, I ran on fumes, there wasn't any way that it could have had 2 more gallons in there.

the most i have been able to fit in my tank is 11.XX i think... and that was riding the E light... wierd... usually its low 10's when i fill up

its around 16 (15.9 or 16.1, i can't remember) according to my Chilton's. And I think that is right because I have had 14 gal pumped at the tank. I think that the reason the other people out there are getting a sputtering is because maybe you have a dirty tank and you are pciking up the dirt.

My light does come on and then it takes 10.5gal to fill it up.

Here what the manual says:
1. Park car on level ground.
2. Drain the tank into a container.
3. Add 3gal of fuel. Turn ignition on. The low fuel warning light should come on within 3mts.
4. Add one more gal. the light should go off within 3mts.
If the light does not come on in step 3, remove the right maintenance access cover (looking from the trunk) and disconnect the coupler from the fuel sending unit. Connect a jumper from green/red terminal to black terminal.
- If the light comes on, the problem is in the sending unit (or its ground ?).
- If the light does not come on, the problem is a break in green/red wire to the gauge, no power to the gauge or a bad bulb.

88accord289, u may try only the last test..

you can do it by shorting some wires at the sending unit above the tank ! it's in the service manual !

pretty easy ! if you wanna do it tell me and i 'll post some pics from the shop manual !

ok then i think its safe to assume that the 86 has a smaller gas tank than the others... the fucking 86 is wierd.. no a20a3 either on the lx-i's!

hey quick question.. is there any difficult in swapping the a20a3 in the older model car 86-87.. Lxi for Lxi.. what would be changed?
motor and ecu right?
arnt the trannys the same?

AccordEpicenter

trannies are close but usable, yikes... umm motor, ecu, wiring harness, emissions box, exaust from a pipe forward (including manifold) a ton of stuff in short. I think youd be best off getting the 4-2-1 exaust from the 88-89 or a pacesetter or dc sports header and run that. All the rest of it wont make more than a 5-7hp difference. Another cost effective measure is the reground cam from what I hear.

it says in the manual that when the light comes on you have 2.6 US Gal left, but my light has NEVER come on. i would drive around with an extra 3 gal container of gas in my trunk just to see if the light ever comes on but its bad to use the gas at the bottom of older cars cuz of all that nasty stuff thats built up over the years.

"88 Accord DX>>> ...but its bad to use the gas at the bottom of older cars cuz of all that nasty stuff thats built up over the years."

whatever nasty stuff there is on the FP strainer, have u ever replaced ur FP ? FP is sucking right at the bottom.. oh well u'll never get the last drop (or 1..2gal).
If u get some water in ur gas, even with the tank full, what do u think is in ur carb/FI ?
