Intake manifold

Ok on any of the a20 efi manifolds, the coolant gets circulated through the corner of the manifold and at the bottom of the throttle body. Because of this, it heats up the manifold dramatically, like as soon as the engine comes up to temp, the manifold magically becomes too hot to touch (this is in 45' weather, driving for 8 min). I was thinking of removing the coolant lines going to the manifold and connecting them together and bypassing the manifold and throttle body and what not. Im hoping to gain a fair increase in power because the air temp should be dramatically less, making more power. Im just worried that if i remove the coolant lines and bypass the manifold ill have manifold and throttle body ice problems... any ideas?

I would esp worried in the winter with a cai but the engine heat may be enough to keep it warm

You'll still soak up heat from the head... and normally the icing problem is with carbs, I never knew thTB's had the same problem.

i've done the TB bypass on my firebird and it runs a hell of alot better .the first thing is disconnect the hose's, then get heatercore hoses and connect the two lines up make sure te clamps are very tight because the line will blow off if there not.
if your wooried about it freezing just pu it back the way it was for the winter

Ok i tried the TB bypass and i noticed a little better performance in the 3500-5k range and i didnt have any problems with TB icing yet but ive only had it like this for 1 day.

Did you plug them or connect them together

you cant plug them because they also supply hot coolant to the fast idle valve and eacv (for 88-89 people) so i ran another tube from the eacv to the fast idle valve and bypassed the throttle body. I ran it under the throttle body right next to the other tubes and left the other ones connected to the TB.

yeah i would try this one, i havent had any probs with it, but it has been cold out. Gives a nice power increase.

Actually alot of people do this. Its an old trick. Some say it works some say its not worth doing. I myself did that a couple years back.

Well guaynabo89, since you did it awhile ago, what would be your assessment of it..... Did you notice any gains??? Since you were living in PA at the time, did you get excess freezing on the mani.???

Never got any freezing problems. Of course I did have the car in a garage and wasn't really exposed to the elements. Well except for the cold.

The only difference was colder intake manifold at first starts. The manifold will still get hot from the engine, but hey every little bit helps.

Oh and I wrapped my headers at the same time too. That made a noticable difference. Not horsepower gains, but noticable.

Yea i felt a little performance gain but it was there somtimes and not there others.. but i bypassed the tb only, and not the manifold yet. Ive ran my car in 20-60 degree weather and ive never had any freezing problems or ice buildup.
