Hey Guys,

First time posting here, I posted at some other boards a few times. I have a 89 accord LX. The timing belt has been done recently. This is my problem.

Ok, at idle.. Sometimes its fine.. Other times the thing holds at 2000 rpms, not sure why this is, sometimes when waiting at the stoplight the car feal's studdery, and if i push the gas a little it stops and feals fine, Im really confused cause its not everytime i start it up, also.. a few times i went to shut it down, it felt like it wanted to kick back up and go again, anyone have any suggestions? live in the vancouver, wa area want to help me figure out whats wrong? Im new to honda, I have owned DSMs mostly, I know nothing really about these cars, hoping to find some answers.

Thanks for the space,

Michael

Is that what it even has to do with? Im not 100% what it could even be caused by.

it could be carb. vacum leak could be a bunch of things. i guarantee if you do a search you'll find a bunch of stuff.

do a search about a 1) choke, 2) vacuum leak 3) throttle stop screw. Its gotta be one of these or a combination.

i dont think its vacuum, but what kinda symptons does a choke have? i get the worse gas millage, like 200 miles a tank!

It's a sticky choke. I have the exact same problem and I've just been dealing with it. The best thing I've found is to let your car warm up for a while and it goes away for me. I get worse gas mileage than I used to also.

My mechanic said the carb needs to be rebuilt, and I dont have that kind of money. I hope this helps you out.

Here is a basic run down of where things are located.
This pic is of the rear of the carb.

Red lines
#1 is the choke plate
#2 is the electric choke
#3 is the fast idle unloader
(not shown is choke opener diaphragm)

Blue line is throttle stop screw

Yellow line is Idle fuel mxture screw.

Ok, so what exactly do we need to check? Then what? How do we fix it? Rebuilding it can't be the only solution

i think you are talking about NORMAL fast idle to warm up your car ! does it do that when you just startup in cold ?

i don';t know about your cars but after i dump about a half a can of carb cleaner on it and make sure it has at least 1/4 a tank of gas it will idle fine (a little jumpy. probably a vacum leak somewhere) and i get all happy and shit and say i love the car and then the next day i come out and it won't idle at all. keep in mind i only run the car a few minutes after it warms up, i have a popped freeze plug. the thing has a mind of it's own.

Is normal "FAST IDLE" When the car revs up to 2k, and holds for awhile, and warms up? Also when u go to put it in reverse while its at 2k, it kinda jerks backwards is that normal? Just trying to find some things out about the car, alot of things i don't know about.

Yes fast idle is 2000 rpms... sometimes a little higher. Don't drop the car into gear when reving above 1,500 rpm or you will get a jerk. Is your car auto or manual?

MrBen

No I am not talking about the normal.

Mine is intermittent, sometimes hot or cold. Doesn't make a difference. Its worse though if I dont let it warm up in the morning (it gets cold here at night)

Also do a search on "choke unloader", and check for vacuum leaks which go to and from it.

My car had a small hole in the choke unloader diaphragm which caused this kind of problem: excessive idle speed even after warm and running rich.
