I went to get my emission tested yesterday and I failed in the area of hydrocarbons. The level was at 1.85gpm. the passijng level is at .80gpm. What may be the problem and what can I do to fix the problem? The hydrocarbon is left over unburned fuel? Please give me some suggestions or cures.
Thank you
Kevin

Eric, he has EFI. you need to read what people have before you start confusing them.

try doing tune ip. spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.
the reason you are not burning fuel because you don't have hot enought spark.

I would like to know how to lean out my mixture too if any one has figured out how to do it. I have an EFT engine too and my exhuast smells extremely RICH. The only is that with our fuel injected models there is no way to change the mixture according to Chilton's.

is teh ECU throwin any codes ? ( under seat ) if not so the O2 sensor is teh one responsible for the mixture in an EFI car !

So is it the O2 sensor or do I need to do a tune up and all that?
Can i test the O2 sensors to see if it is working right

as i said check the ECU ! if the O2 sensor is bad it 's gonna tell you !

The ECU won't always tell you the O2 is bad. If most of your readings during emmissions testing is on the high side, it's a pretty good bet it's the O2 sensor. And Shepard is right about the tune up. At least do a quick inspection of everything to make sure they don't need replacing.
