View Full Version : Specific PS or tranny fluid?

Can I use "generic" brands for the tranny, and PS fluid?

I had what I thought was an oil leak, but turned out to be the driver's driveshaft seal. I'd say the tranny fluid is time to change, when I mistake it for oil.

:)

The power steering fluid has to be the "honda" type, not necessarily Honda brand. I got some at NAPA.

Your 5-spd manual tranny uses 10w30 oil or Honda MTF.

Great! Thanks for the info. I guess I could have looked at my Honda Service Manual CD. :)

I'm getting lazy, because you guys are so quick with the info.

:D

Actually, the specs in the Service Manual says Dexron AT fluid. That works for me, because I thought I had an oil leak, but it was really tranny fluid from the driver's DS seal.

... I'd say when that visual mistake happens, its time to change the fluid. :D

I never have understood where the things go. I have mine because I have had the car since 89. It stays in the glovebox. Why would anyone remove it and not put it back? Doesn't do you much good without the car.

Anyway, Helm sells owners manuals, too (helminc.com)

DR ZED -

I'm not sure from what you wrote that you are clear on this...

If you have a 5 spd tranny, use 10w30 or Honda MTF.

If you have an automatic tranny, use Honda ATF or Dexron AT Fluid.

If your oil seal is leaking, replace it!

I've had my owners manual since '88. I guess I could sell it on ebay for $5 in about 15 years.

Dj thanks for the info. Please believe, I am very technically inclines, and just lazy the last few days. My fiance and I just moved into our first home (READ: MY OWN GARAGE!!!).

The leak is actually tranny fluid, from the driver's drive shaft seal in the tranny. Its time to swap that fluid, when I realized I mistook tranny fluid for engine oil! :)

Will do this weekend.

Yes, Dexron II is what I'll use.

Just so you know, all you will most likely find is Dexron III which is backwards compatible with Dexron II.

Dude... easy on ya.

I downloaded it the other day, made it all PDF.

I'll upload it to a site if somebody wants to host that version. Its 4 damn CDs.

Thanks AccordEX. The second day I had the car, I took a good look at your posts. Well done.
