i was just wondering ! what are the signs for bad ignitor ? bad idle , bad acceleration , hesistating ?

thanx a lot guys !

I would think it would be more of a "no spark" condition.... not to say that what you mentioned is not possible.

What's wrong with your car??

Bad ignitor = no spark, no signal to the coil.

nothing is wrong with the car but i really want to know !

oldschool > so this could cause cylinder misfire , hesitation right ?

it could also be a weak spark or the engine running very rough missing all the time. Its usually the last thing to check unless you have a no start condition or the engine was running and then died and refused to restart

wtf does the ignitor actually do? I know it won't run w/out it but why can some older cars run coils?

I agree w/ OldSchoolSwap.
No ignition no start.
The ignitor acts like a circuit breaker (same idea as breaker points)
It actually replaces the points and the condenser
in mechanical ignitions.
Chances of this going bad is minimal.
Don't worry bout this or the pick-up coil.

Even with the ignitor you still have an ignition condenser

Yes it can..........killers of ignition modules,...heat and spike voltages

i wish my car worked with a condenser and a breaker like old cars !
but what does all of those do ! ?? ( getting technical here :D )

thanx a lot guys !

no u don't :flipa:
you have to always readjust your points whereas the electronic is very reliable but when the ignitor goes bad you start getting all sorts of weird problems like no idle or fried coils

I agree with eric here,no moving parts that wear out in electronic ignition so its more reliable.

A condenser is just a "bucket", that stores/holds electrical energy, the breaker is just a on/off switch for the coil

ACCORD EX

so when does it tell the coil to turn on or off ??

rotation of distributor shaft, which is like a cam,has 4 high points,(4 cyl),breaker points open on the high points of dissy cam, which switch's off the coil

there is alot of wear on the rubbing block of the points, plus the points themselves are prone to burning and pitting due to the sparking, which is where the condensor comes in,if this fails then the points will fail faster due to over sparking of the points, which will also cause ignition faults

thanx a lot Pete ! :)
i also checked www.howstuffworks.com and they had a great how to on ignition system ! :)

I have a 92 accord that has spark till it gets warmed up then has none till the next day changed main relay still have same problem

check your spark plug gap, a large gap loads up the module which will eventually fail.
they do tend to work all right when cold, but when the ecu moves from the cold start to normal running fuel maps, they tend to either misfire or stop completely.
a nice rich mixture( ie cold start and warm up) is easier to ignite than the leaner warm running fuel map

Holy 11 year old thread batman.

Sometimes ive seen ignition coils do the same thing as the symptoms youve described

On the '92s, typically the ignitor fails completely and gives you a big tow bill. It's a known problem with those cars.

I was wrong lol
