A co-worker of mine has a complete 87 Civic HB w/ a b16a in it. It is not in the best condition :barf: but still runs. He will sell me the whole thing for $200! So naturally I am more than a little sceptical. I went to go look at it today, and saw the engine: it indeed reads "b16a", but the only thing is the valve cover does not look like other b16s I have seen (does not have dohc vtec logo, and does not have a "smooth" top) but Im no expert. He said the motor came out of an 88 teg, but to the extent of my knowlege, b16a was not a motor put in 88 tegs, unless of course his friend (who rolled his teg and traded the engine to my buddy for his el camino) had a swap done. If anyone has a lot of knowledge about b16a's or 88 tegs, please post!!!

Anyway if all goes well, I think I will buy the car, and drop the engine into my accord, even tho I was planning on getting something faster than a b16a, for $200 complete, I cant pass that up.

Er, sounds like a D16 not B16.

If it's DOHC and the sparkplugs are in the top/middle of the head, then it's either a B series or one of the DOHC D series. Anything else is probably a waste of time.

Yes, the spark plugs are in the middle of the valve cover, and the engine id # reads "B16A"

The valve cover? no. everything else, yeah pretty similar, I take it then that the soilenoid is located in the bottom left of that pic, between the plug wires and the valve cover? If so, I really couldnt tell because I wasnt looking for it. Also supposing it isnt a b16a, then how could the engine label say b16a? (not making a point, just asking a question.)

As for the valve cover looks the same xcept for 1 thing: if you looked at it from the side (with the headers in front of you), it would look like: _--_--_--_ as opposed to -------------- like in the pic, if u see what Im saying. Another thing, it had the "PGM-FI" in back of the intake manifold, which I do not see in this pic (removed?). When I look at it again on monday, I will look for the solenoid, and also bring a pic of a B16a to compare it to. Until then, more feedback would be extreamly helpful. thanks

In the 86-89 Integras honda had a b16 that is like a b18a . It was non vtec, and the motor is a wate of time and money, but if the tranny is manual, the gears are low like a type r tranny

Yeah D16A1 is what is supposed to be in an 88 teg, but I did read the engine lable and it did say B16A. Now that I know what too look for when I go back, I can tell what engine really is in the car, and my hunch is that it is going to be a D16A1. Either way, if its a fast car reguardless of what engine is in it, I might just buy it as a project car or for parts, I mean its only $200.

That would have to be a pretty good deal whether it is B16A or not because it does at least run and for $200...?

Well, my co-worker was sick this weekend, so he wont have the car ready till later this week. When he has it ready I will look at it again, test drive it, and then decide if I want to buy it or not. Ill keep this updated.
