well.
this is the case..
my sister was driving down the turnpike.. and the car just shut off...
everything....
lights were on and so was the radio...
so she finally got it towed to were she lives..
now...
we got there and changed the battery for the batt that was in my moms van..
we were able to roll up the windows and such because before u couldnt..
question is this..

when u turn he ignition key to the second slot right befor u kick the engine over. none of the dash lights turn... as if the car had no batery at all..:wtf:
another thing.. the car is getting power.. because the lights turn on and all..
so.. would could it be??
i was thinking it would have to deal with the ignition connection.. we were trying to push-start it but of course.. as u know u have to have the key in the on position for it to kick over..
well..
any help would be appreciate..
lol
i know
THIS IS A 3GEE SITE
but its my sister! so ya.. SHOW SOME LOVE!!!!:sadwave:

Umm...fuses maybe? Is it possible to put the key in the "ON" position? If so, you should be able to push start it, unless there's something really wrong with the car. When/if you try to start it, does the ignition click or anything? Sometimes smacking it with a hammer helps...don't ask why. I had a starting problem that turn out to be the main relay (fuse-thingy). I was told the main relay controls the fuel regulation, which may explain why the car just stopped running...the relay told the fuel system to stop pumping or something.

I'm no car specialist, but those are some ideas. You might also take a look at your alternator. I think it's supposed to pump out about 14.4v or so.

Good luck! :)

This shouldn't have anything to do with the lights or anything, but the big thing with the 4th gens was the distributor puking out (that the one they changed to having the coil inside the distributor, instead of externally like ours). I'm pretty sure there was a recall on this too. This would cause the car to just up and quit at any given time if it went bad. Otherwise I would suspect a bad ignition switch (which they did have a recall on too, but I think that was 5th and 6th gens). Worth a look though! Or maybe the electrical gremlins got it...that would suck, lol. That's all I can think of offhand

OK.. heres the thing.. the car stopped running for her.
so how could the ignition switch effect the car from running if its already on? <i ask myself this...
then..
we checked the fuses
but the thing that is driving me crazy is why wont the dash lights turn on..
it just stays blank as if it had no power whatsoever

ok
well we connected the starter directly to the battery. and it cranks over..
apparently before we got there my sisters friend alex's uncle.. i think.. well .. he got the car to start-up .. connecting it directly.. the thing is now we couldnt do it ..
so we came to the conclustion that no fuel was getting to the motor..
and then we figured that the fuel pump turned off after he started it manually..
so basiclly it was only gonna start that one time..
or something along those lines
cause now all it does its crank..
do u guys know were the fuel relay.. would be?

it's pretty confusing man ! you said dash light weren't on ! so i don't think it's fuel related ! check for main fuses ( 80 , 70 , 40 A ) if they exist on a 4th gen !

mike it has to be fuel related..
ur right the lights dont come on.
but we checked the fuses..
there allllll good!
the car cranks but just wont turn over.
so wtf..
this problem is giving me a headache..
not seeing that sweet 4th gen in motion is giving me a headache

so no lights on the dash , starter cranks , no blown fuses !
so my bet now is on the ignition switch ! try some WD 40 in there !

That is correct.

Trouble shooting is a pain. Look for spark and fuel and figure out which one its not getting. Hard to tel with your descriptions.

Okay I'm new to the posting things but not to mechanics. I would unscrew the bolt on top of the fuel filter and check and see if you see fuel shooting out of it on the on position. Or you can just pull out one of the spark plug wires and stick a screwdriver in it and touch metal. When I say touch metal, I don't mean physically put your hand on metal, Hold the spark plug wire on the rubber piece, with the screwdriver sticking out of the wire, touch the top of one of the valve cover nuts (that hold down the valve cover) and try having someonelse crank it up and see if you get spark.

P.S Try not to get shocked...happens alot. Kinda feels good in the lower part though. lol. Shock the Balls!!!!

Hey, WAIT!!! I had the same problem with my car like 2 weeks ago! Everything works, it cranks but the engine wont start, right? Yeah, easy fix. The relay for the fuel pump is either faulty or the fuel pump is bad. I was on the highway and the car just died. Same as you. Here's how to fix it:
The relay for the fuel pump is under the dash near the fuses. You have to look back there. It's a gray box about 2 inches by 1 inch by one inch and it's plugged into a black plastic plate about 6 by 8 inches. There's some other stuff attached but you should be able to see the gray box as soon as you pop your head down under.

Pull the gray box out. There should be 4 prongs on the side that was in the black plate. Take some copper wire and wrap it around the two prongs that are closest to the door and push it all the way down. Plug the box back in. Try starting the car.

If it works, your relay is bad. You can leave the wire on the relay, no biggie, or you can get another. If it does not work, your fuel pump is bad. Lemme know how it goes!

Maybe there is not power going to the fuses??!!
