i hear a lot about audio. but i could not figure what an amp will do. some guys have amps just for their speakers. and i know you have to have an amp for subs. so what does an amp do???

If you already didn't know, Amp is short for amplifier. And that is exactly what it does. It amplifies the sound coming from your head unit to your speakers. Since speakers and expecially subs these days are made to handle much more power, Head units are just not powerful enough to run them. Your standard door speakers and 6x9s will run fine off the head unit. However, subs have to be run off an amp. An amp will allow you to play your system louder without having to turn the head unit up so much, thus decreasing distortion to the speakers. That's the basic principle behind having an amp.
