What kind of tranny oil do I use

Ok i change my cv boot and i lost some tranny oil on my 86 accord LX-i and i missing half a cront and i was woundering what type do i use. Oh by the way i have a 5 speed manual tranny. my friend sayed 50w but that seems to thick to me. help me out crew

My friend used 10W30 synthetic in his Prelude tranny (same type, different gearing) and the thing shifted sooooooooooooo smooth. There are some viscosity enhancers that will help out motor oil in trannies, get all the gears nice and lubed up.

If ya do full synthetic, you should drain all of your old oil out.

well if you are adding oil you have to figure out what oil you have in the tranny , is MANUAL GEARBOX OIL , or ENGINE OIL ! ?
you can know it by smell and color ! , you notice that gear oil is thicker ! don't mix different kinds of oil !

My service manual says "oil change every 30K miles. Use only SAE30, 10W30, 10W40, or 20W-40 weight oil rated SE or SF grade. Capacity 2.4 quarts." The ambient temperature picture lists the 10W30 or 10W40 viscosities as good for all temperatures.

The thing that I don't understand is what the hell are half of you talking about. I thought that there wasn't different types of tranny oil. I thought there was Honda ATF and MTF? Isn't SAE30 etc for engine oil? If he really is talking about tranny oil wouldn't he just use the Honda MTF? I could just be a crazy idiot but whatever.

The manual tranny uses regular motor oil, 10w-30 is probably the best for all temperatures. The Honda MTF seems to work even better though. That's what I switched to and it did seem to smooth out the shifts quite a bit, even though it was real smooth with the motor oil. DO NOT USE GEAR OIL!!! Your tranny will die very shortly!!

I've heard that full synthetic oil in the tranny is not good. Don't know why, but that's why I've heard.

honda mtf is best because it has moly in it, but 10w-30 is fine

Get Honda MTF @ your local Honda dealer. Any Honda dealer will have it. Expect to pay about $4.50 per quart though, and you'll need 3 quarts.

And yes, 10w-30 is indeed motor oil

There's only 1 kind of MTF. Just go to the parts counter and say you need 3 quarts of manual transmission fluid, and they'll reach under the counter and pull out 3 quarts. There's no kind of variations or anything.

If you don't use regular motor oil or the honda oil, reverse and fifth gear will dry up and go out. If you put in the wrong oil, reverse only lasts about two months.

If you just bought it and it hasn't been installed and driven, then more than likely there is no oil in it since the inner CV's seal the oil in. If there is oil in it and it's not quite full, then I see no problems with mixing them, but why??? If you're unsure of what's in there, just drain it out and put new stuff in, whether it be 10w-30 or MTF.

i just need 3 quarts right. no i just confussed i just put a new tranny. and i was driving it and i had a broken boot and i changed it and i had to take it out the shaft completely and oil came out like half a quart and. will i asked the guy who installed it for me he said he bought some in a city in a dealer and he said 50 weight. i was like damn 50 it look like motor oil to me tho. so yeah fucked up shit.. lol

Yea if the stuff in there is questionable, definitely drain it out and put in the stuff you KNOW is right for your tranny. I would still recommend the Honda MTF, but 10w-30 motor oil will work fine too. And yes, 3 quarts. You won't use the entire 3 quarts, I think it's like 2.4 or something like that. Just be sure the car is sitting on a completely level surface (<--very important), and fill it up slowly until the fluid starts overflowing out of the hole.

oh its intalled and everthing. since u said that yeah when i checked it was only missing like half a qaurt. but when i fill it i got fill it to its starts coming out a little right. to many question but fuck i payed like 700.00 to get it in.

Yea jack it up to drain it from the bottom, but then put it back down and fill it from the top. Even if it's dropped, as long as it's sitting on a level surface (flat driveway, etc), and you'll be fine. Don't really need a pump, just a funnel with a flexable hose works just fine

you could probably go that far but Honda MTL seems to work the best as far as protection and ease of shifting I have noticed every thing is much smoother when I use it.

What he's saying is that 10w-30 will work, but Honda MTF will work better. The motor oil contains detergents and other additives that are needed in a conbustion engine, but not needed in a transmission. The MTF eliminates those additives, and uses more lubricating components instead, for better lubrication. It will shift better and create less friction inside your tranny.

Use either one, whatever you want, cuz they'll both work. We're just telling you from experience which one works better. I too would recommend the Honda MTF, but it's up to you, so use which ever one you want.
