JG/EDELBROCK ADJUSTABLE CAM GEARS
• Please study these instructions carefully before installing your new sprockets. If you have any questions or problems, please call our Technical Hotline at: 1-800-416-8628, 7:00 am
– 5:00 pm, Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Friday or e-mail us at [email protected].
• DESCRIPTION: The JG Edelbrock adjustable cam gears #4720/4722 fit SOHC 1988-1995 Honda Civics. Each one-degree increment represents one degree of cam movement, which
is two degrees of crank movement. This is the industry standard. Because this product is adjustable it is legal only for use on racing vehicles that are never used on the highway.
• TUNING GUIDELINES: In general, advancing the cam will increase low and mid rpm power
and decrease peak horsepower. Retarding the cam has the opposite effect. Many applications benefit from advancing the cam 2-5°. Dyno tuning is highly recommended to obtain
the
maximum performance.
• RELATED PRODUCTS: Our growing Sport Compact product line includes everything from
headers and nitrous to high-performance manifolds and cylinders heads (available 2002). All of our products are designed to be the best in class, built with great attention to detail,
and tested on the dyno and at the track. To order a catalog, call 1-800-FUN-TEAM.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1) Tag and remove the ignition wires, and the wire clamp. Remove the rocker cover. Removing the spark plugs will make it easier to turn the engine over in step 8.
2) Remove the top section of the plastic timing belt cover.
3) To simplify the installation, turn the engine over to TDC on the number one cylinder (closest
to the driver’s side). The "up" letters on the stock cam sprocket should be up, and the timing
marks horizontal.
4) Inspect the timing belt for cracks or oil or coolant soaking and replace if present. Refer to your
service manual for replacement instructions. Wipe up any oil or solvent that gets on the belt while you are working on it.
5) Remove the tensioner access plug from the lower belt cover. Loosen (do not remove!) the belt
tensioner-mounting bolt.
6) Remove the cam sprocket mounting bolt and the cam sprocket. Be careful to not rotate engine
with the belt disconnected!
7) Install the JG/Edelbrock Sprocket using the supplied Woodruff key. Set the adjustment to zero
and tighten the socket head screws. Tighten the hub to cam bolt to 40 ft-lbs using blue Loctite
8) Rotate the engine 5-6 revolutions (counterclockwise when facing the engine pulleys) to seat the belt.
9) Tighten the tensioner-mounting bolt to 40 ft-lbs. If you can twist the belt more than 90° by hand,
the belt is too loose. If so, check to see if the tensioner is stuck by loosening the mounting bolt
and pulling up on the tensioner (use a bent hanger or hook).
10) Loosen the five socket head screws and adjust the gear to the desired timing position by turning the cam via the hub to cam mounting bolt. Tighten the screws using an allen wrench. When
set at 0°, our adjustable sprocket duplicates the stock cam timing. Not all adjustable gears use a true 0°.
11) Replace the belt cover.
12) Clean the valve cover seal surfaces on the head. If the seal is not cracked or hardened it may
be reused. Press it into the receiver groove in the cover.
13) Apply automotive sensor safe silicone to the four corner edges on the head seal surface where
the cam caps meet the head. Allow to air-dry for 10 minutes before installing the cover.
14) Tighten the cover to 8 ft-lbs in two or three steps.
15) Install ignition wires, cover and PCV hose.

dunno but i can tell you civic d15/d16 cam gears DO Not fit at all... they physically bolt on but have 34 teeth or somthing like that... we need 41 i believe, i cant recall off the top of my head. F22 is closer at 38/39 or so and H22 gears have the same amt of teeth as a20 but im not sure if they fit.

The number of teeth on the cam gear will be twice the number on the crank gear. It must be an even number so 41 and 39 aren't possibilities.

Also keep in mind if you reduce the size of the pullies you're going to have more slack in the belt, make sure you're tensioner is able to take it up.

Here is a pic of one I had made. It weighs the same as the stock one so no gains in weight reduction.

Darryl at open loop motor sports sent me this email on adjustable cam gear. These are for the A20A

Hey!!!!
Greta news.. Im able to contract with a big company
that can make a run of custom camgears @ $110 a pice
and $10 more for red or blue.... BUT I need 20 people
to make this happen( basicaly Ineed to make a batch to
be cost efective. So once I got at least 16 people
interested I have the go a head. It will take at least
4 months from now to make them. So send any one who
wants a cam gear over e-mail me and send a deposit of
$50 and I'll have them made... refundable if I dont
make them... If I dont get enough people and I do
plan to make them Prices will be slightly higher.
It probaly helps to post an add on the forms and other
places
Thanks , ps I didn't for get about u
Darryl,

Here's his email address

so i was crusing threw the web looking for just random parts i dont need and came across this.....
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/2336/a20camgear8pi.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
the following has been copied and pasted stright from the site
http://www.hondiscountparts.com/performance/
Part Name Honda Accord Timing Chain

just not sure about the name part. they call it a timing chain when in reality its a cam gear that uses a time belt not a chain, but who knows if the picture is really it, the site has alot of pitures for products that arent even the product there listing, but the discription is spot on with the picture

Mike's89AccordLX
04-07-2006, 10:08 PM
Well the one's pictured aren't for our cars, b/c they don't have enough teeth.

I counted them errrghh.....

We need 42 if I remember correctly. That red one only had 34 or something like that.

And considering they're selling them as a pair set, that just shows you that it's not for our cars and they have mislabeled their product or have no clue what they are selling.

If edelbrock has a listing on it's site then get it, but a second hand distributor could be listing it wrong.

ha i saw "chain" and nearly wet myself...

then i read the rest of it.
I wish our cars had timing chains =/

Vanilla Sky
04-09-2006, 08:27 PM
why? they wear just like belts do.

AccordEpicenter
04-09-2006, 08:45 PM
id take a belt any day over a chain. Chains stretch.

Versanick
04-12-2006, 08:37 PM
sometimes it's tough to tell when chains are going bad. timing chains snap on 2001++ cars all the time. At least a belt can show wear, and be regularly replaced. Chains are rarely replaced, which provides unpredictability of when it will go bad.

i just called this place, they told me it was for our cars, he went and checked the box and it said it was for 86-89 accord dx, lx, lxi, sei accords.

i called this place http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/apw_shop/yymmp-vp/honda/accord/timing_chains/1989/apw4445e6597feb8.html?apwcid=P1135867996W43b3f85c7 ab9e&apwkwd=Honda+Accord+Timing+Chains
its also cheaper than the b8er posted, he said if this wasnt four cars and didnt fit properly or anything they can refund our money back :)
