View Full Version : my car is stalling and it's not a vacuum leak

Well my car was losing power earlier so I changed the pirmary and secondary fuel filters and it worked. But then before I did all of that, I tried to take my carburetor a loose. I didn't take it all the way apart. From what I understand the carb is made of 3 mainparts(levels). I only took the top off. I unhooked some hoses, but I hooked every last hose up exactly back where I got it from. The only thing that I really messed with was the float and the throttle cable. Well when I thought I had fixed my car, I put everything back together, but now I can't keep my car on!! It's hard to start and when it does, it'll go up to about 2000 or 3000rpm and then die. When I'm on the road I have to put my foot on the brake and the gas. What's the problem. It's not the spark plugs, vacuum leaks, or distributor. So what else can it be??

did you connect the wire to the back of the carb? if the wire isn't connected the idle passage will be blocked and you won't get fuel at idle.

also if you just removed the carb there is a chance you could be sucking up coolant... but you'd probably notice smoke out the tail pipe.

what else can block the idle passage?

rust... open the top hat and look for rust powder at the bottom of the float bowl.

lol, yea check the wire on the back of the carb, it should have 12v at idle (or when you turn the inition to "on")
