tailight smoking question

i wanna paint the amber part of my tails red, and then smoke all of the red part (so the tails are smoked red and then the white reverse light) should i paint them red, wait a long time for that to dry, then put on th nightshade and then clearcoat? or should i do the whole process of red and then put nightshade over that clearcoat and do clear again? i figured i should put it on the red but i thought i shoulde check..
