after 122k miles my auto tranny decided to crap out on me. instead of paying $2100 for a rebuilt one, i swapped over to 5spd. if you are not a really good mechanic i wouldnt attempt it. i managed to swap the pedals, and i had a LOT of help from Steve(88lxi68) and Mark(markmdz89hatch) with just about everything else. thanks guys!

Im seriously thinking about doing that. How long did it take. What kind of major problems did you run into?

3 days.

Major problems:

1. Getting the 5spd aligned with the engine

2. Using the wrong bolt in the front and not realizing it

3. Forgetting that the center beam bushing can be adjusted

4. The tranny not having a bolt for the reverse lights to function

If it were not for the bolt i used in the wrong place, it could have been done in 2.5 days.

I am currently checking out how to do this as well....Here's what I've picked up so far.....

Here is what you need for a 5 speed swap into an automatic:

Manual Transmission

Manual transmission mount

Shift linkage

Clutch cable (we don't have a resorvoir)

Flywheel

Driver’s side axle

Clutch pedal, springs, and switch
Brake pedal (manual ones are smaller)

*(Whole pedal box was recommended highly)

LX, LXi, and SEi came with cruise. pedals bolt to the brake booster, unless you have a dx stay clear of dx.

Shifter imitation leather boot

An ECU from a 88/89 5 speed if you have an 88/89 EFI (the 86/87 DON'T work with 88/89's)

Gauge cluster (I want to get the one with no P, N, D, lights)

Make sure you get a new clutch

I think Clutch number is 22105-PH4-A01 for lxi. not 100% sure.

Get a new release bearing (www.nopionline.com)some clutch kits come with them.

Resurface the flywheel ($50 max.)

You don't HAVE to have the proper ECU but if you can get the wrecker to throw it in, you might as well take it to make it more "factory"

TIPS

The bracket is fastened to the brake booster/master cylinder and it holds the metal part of the clutch cable after it comes through the firewall.

The only wires attached to the pedal assembly are the wires for the brake pedal switch and a clutch safety switch.

There's a little bracket that you need to mount onto that piece where the two bolts come up through to hold the shift rods in place. That bracket is so you can screw in the plastic finishing piece of the center console to it.

i drove her for a while this morning and its like i have a brand new car. the motor feels a lot better. she still need some work though. first is an alignment. and the brakes seem to be off a little bit, im not sure if its the pedal or what, but it needs to be adjusted. and lastly im experiencing and idle problem. it may just becuase it was sitting for almost 2 weeks. but she will be ready for the meet in august! (hopefully with some new rims)

Well, if nothing else, new tires. There's something up with that front end. Those tires are wearing like you have 5 deg. of negative camber up front. aka...not good.

If you want, I can help you out with the brakes. You might just need to bleed them out again. Also, take a look at the brake lines and make sure that the line itself is not frayed at all. Shit, just remembered, I forgot to take a look at those pads to see the wear. Hmm.... if you want me to take a look at it at all, just call me on the cell and we'll figure out a time. As for the idle, just blow it out a little, rev it up to about 5K a few times. Run this tank of gas to about a 1/4 tank and fill her up and put a fuel system cleaner in it too. That, along with a new fuel filter and if nothing else, you'll be able to narrow the problem down a little.
Later man. Oh, cell: 860.689.3498

Hey man. I also did the swap, But what did you do about the cruise control. I t wont work because the car is registering it to be in park on that stupid rely witchy thing. I have tried to jump it several times as well as reqire it, but i always get the same thing, wither the car will not start or the car will not shut off.! its wacked. Anyways, if you have any ideas on how to fix this problem could you please help!. also about the reverse light, and how to make them engage!

thanks for the comments everyone. ( 89 Accords Rock ) - i havent yet figured out how to get cruise control to work. i was thinking maybe a toggle switch in between the two wires that have to be jumped, this way it will start like its in park, then when you hit the switch the car will think it is in drive letting you use the cruise control. i just havent had time to play around with it. also switching to a 5spd ECU might do the trick. i think i just may take out my cruise becuase i never use it. wiring reverse lights is on my to do list as well. ill let you know when i figure them out
