i just did a minor tune up in my car (spark plugs, O2 sensor, air filter, dist. cap/rotor) and this is the deal: my car's top speed is 80 MPH, floored! abt 3400 RPM is the max that i could get my car to run. any suggestions? and how come i can't bring it to the redline even if i floor it? thanks

:( btw... the engine has 243K.

Sounds like compression issues and/or engine rebuild time. Replace the fuel filters as well.

243K is a lot of miles. Do a compression test and see what you're getting. I had 185K on mine and i could only do about 110 tops floored.

You might want to check for vacuum leaks... your seconndary might not be opening all the way. I'ts best too hook the seconday directly to the carb port... uhh shoot, this will get technical.. just check your vacuum lines.

is there a thread regarding abt vaccum leaks? if there is id go and fix the mofo rt away. :(

their are a bunch I would suggest you remove the air bod and check all the lines going to the carb for cracks ect. Also you may want to give the carb a good cleaning.

You will need a vacum pump to check. Also the compression should be around 150 PSI.

ya sometimes when i kick mine and floor it...it seems to reach a certain speed or rpm and the it just doesn't want to go past that..
and mine is injected..so i haveno idea what it is.. but i've had mine up to 170km no prob

also if u have an auto trans check the fluid level, low fluid causes all sorts of performance weirdness

could it possibly be the cat starting to clog up? im not really sure about it but its just a thought

thanks for the ideas guys yeah perhaps ill 1st check my compression and the carb. so for a 243K mileage you say the compression should read abt... 150?

Yea a clog cat and dirty air filter or to big ones. When your cat starts to go bad it will get red hot and smell bad. I fix both of those on my car and I hit 120mph no prob. I have 130K miles

would a hi flo cat be better than the stock one?

Or better yet, none at all! But if you have DEQ checks in your area then you'll need a cat

So if i found a motor that comp tested out to 180-180-180-180 thats should have pretty low miles and its a good motor. SCHWEET! :lol

Yes and you will still pass emissions.

170 PSI is pretty damn good. With that much it would be best to run 92 octane to get the most out of it. 150 should be around normal. Remember the higher the compression you have the higer octane you will need to prevent knocking.

if you dont have to pass an emissions test just hollow the stcok one out..thats all i did..it runs ten times better and my car has hit 120 no prob. also. I believe some companies make specific high flow cats..

could it be coz mine's an AT? but even though... it seems like the owner that had this car was ridin' it buck wild back in the days. :( there are sum signs of negligence and stupidity from the previous owner...

That will surely hurt top speed.
