View Full Version : Hesitation/Chugging

Good morning guys. I have an 89 Accord Coupe LXI. The car is a 5spd with 263,000 miles. She runs like a top. Plenty of power and no misses.

Here's my question. If I accelerate at a slight/moderate rate, I end up with the car chugging. It still accelerates fine, but just chuggs. If I step on it and let the rpm's run high there is no problem, it's only under light acceleration. The car doesn't miss. I can hold the rpm's at any number and there is no miss and when I let off of the gas there is no backfire. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

How about a tune-up and change the fuel filter 1st.

Thanks. I did put new NGK plugs and air filter in. I guess that the next step would be the fuel filter and cap/rotor. The wires are relatively new.

Ok guys, I've done the full tune up. The timing has been checked. I still have the problem. I don't believe it to be a miss because it doesn't miss at idle or at any rpm range I take it to. It only does it on acceleration and then not every time. Also the further that I push the accelerator down while accelerating the less that it bucks.

Any ideas?

maybe carbon build up on the valve and/or piston tops? As you accelerate, the carbon expands a little and so the valve doesn't seal properly is my guess.
Run some chevron techron or similar product.

Did you check the ignition coil and distributor?
When you did a full tune up did you do every possible tune up possible. i.e. adjust the valves, check compression, vacuum leaks?
Checked the timing belt?
You might have a vacuum leak somewhere.
How does the car idle?

Did you change the fuel filter?

Hey Mac, yes I did change the fuel filter. Actually the car is going to the garage tomorrow for new upper ball joint, coil springs and struts. Then Thurs it goes to the dealer for an alignment. I'll talk to one of the tech's then and see what they think.

Did you ever get this problem fixed? My 88 Accord is doing the same similar thing...could it be the clutch slipping?

I have already tuned the engine according to the advice in this post.

Wow old thread! I had the same problem on my '94 accord. Not sure how the fi a20 (assuming yours is, kwmowery), but I removed the fuel rail and there was an egr plate? on the intake manifold just before it want into the head. There was so much carbon build up that there was I think 4 holes completely packed and the little passage ways were jam packed too. I got it all out with a drill bit and the car runs smooth now. Hope this helps.

i remember when my IACV was disconnected it would act like it had launch control when i would rev it in neutral... i would check that... and check if its throwing any codes... if not then just check the compression and check for vac leaks... keep us posted
