Understand that almost ANY alternator isn't going to give you crap for idle, NOT just rewound ones. Many people have the mindset "aftermarket alternator = more power all the time" not true.

The ones that give you good amperage at idle as well as the rest of the band cost a LOT more than ones that put out rated power in the 2000-3000 range.

I have yet to see a cheap solution to HO alternators for our cars... everyone I've ever seen is at least $400, except for re-wraps. Unless you're planning on keeping your car for a long time, I think a re-wrap would be the way to go.

87 hatch is right. almost all alternators suck at idle. the only alternators that DON'T suck at idle are police alternators. this is because they are supposed to be able to run all that electronics, plus lights while they have someone stopped. if only we could find a way to use crown victoria or even impala alternators on our cars, i could prolly get a hold of some police alternators.

Re-wraps, because it's using stock alternator and often upping the internals, aren't the most reliable... they're usually prone to giving out after a year or two or more...

I checked and Stinger alternators are more than $300. The guy told me at his shop and he said it would be anywhere from $500-$650 for just the alternator.

Yep, but those alternators are also very nice.

the reason rewound alternators dont last long is because when you rewind them you up the power outage but you also up the heat it produces. it cant disperse the heat very well so over time it just dies. but you can pick up an alternator for cheap at a junkyard plus ive seen then for $30 on ebay. that way you always have a spare.

yea i ran a rewound for 2 years with the system and never gave me a problem, and i was running 1250wrms and no caps on a stock batt. For the cost advantage id do it. You are right at idle you get nothing, my car discharges itself at idle, but at 1600 rpm you get full power, all 140 amps of it
