Car runs great, lots of Gas Fumes though... Help?

So the new Accord is running great. I'm calculating that it's getting over 30mpg in the city (for me, not a ton of stop and go.) But the deal is, it's always smelling like gas fumes, including in the car when the vent is on. So I looked up in the trouble shooting the Haynes manual. And it said that there was this that and the other thing to check, which I know are all working ok, but what I didn't know about was the charcoal filter. So I unplugged it and there was about 2-3 seconds of hissing as gas was being released. Now a friend of mine said it wasn't good when it was hissing like that. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem. I mean, it's not that bad. I can live with it, but it's nice to not have to smell gas every time I get out of my car.

BTW: It's the strongest on the drivers side, near the intake/carb. Not as noticeable on the right/passenger side.

The charcoal canister re-releases the fumes from the gas tank into the carb when you first start the car. If also vents fumes from the float bowl. There could be too much pressure inside your gas tank. You could also have a faulty valve... or the vacuum to the valve isn't working and pressure is just building up to the point where it leaks into the engine bay and car.

Which valve is this?

there is a valve on top of the charcoal canister with a small 5/32 in vacuum hose.

or at least there should be.

k, how would i check the valve to make sure it's working?

I guess you can get a hand vacuum pump and apply vacuum and see if the vacuum holds for one things.. and I guess after that just see if vapors come out when vacuum is applied. BTW which hose did the hissing come from?

well i went out and checked it, and i was pulling the hose from something compleatly different. So i'm gonna need to dig a little deeper.
