I'm getting a new valve cover gasket and two engine mounts
for a 86 honda accord dx.

Has anyone had this done? Does anyone know how much it should run me?

I have it in the shop now and the guy quoted me like 64 dollars for each engine mountand like 85 for a new valve cover gasket with all the parts included. I think he also said that it was gonna be 140 to put the mounts in. That totals $353.

Does that seem like a good price for what i want done?

$85 for a valve cover gasket? Is it gold plated or radio-active or something?

Are ya sure it wasn't $8.50?

lol!! u know what i've had so many numbers going through my head the last week or so. it might have been 8.50 but I think he said something about some pieces that go with it and i think he include labor too.

I'll find out exactly what he is charging me for when i talk to him later but i just wanted to know what prices i should be expecting.

Midas supposedly tightened it for me but it's still leaking so i just want to go ahead and get it replaced, get a oil change and be done with it.

i checked on napa online and they wanted 40 bucks for a valve cover gasket set. Its typical for a auto repair shop to charge twice the price for some part.

I got a new valve cover gasket and the three grommets for about $16 from the Honda dealership.

iight thanx nxracer. my guy is already working so it's too late to take it to a honda dealership. I heard they can sometimes be a rip off also. Wish i could have gotten ur deal Alex.lol

So does anyone know about motor mounts?

Too late but you could have done the valvecover gasket yourself. What they charging you make sense if they dont charge less than an hour of labor.

Whats shop rates up to? I know around here if its even a minor job they charge 1hour min which can be anything up to $60CAN

mindlos- That would have been the cheaper way, but I have no idea how to work on cars. I'm just learning the names of the different parts and what they do.lol

final estimate-

$40- motor mount
$60- 2nd motor mount
$140- to put the mounts in

$80- valve cover gasket assembly

total-$340

I still can't figure the 80 buck valve cover gasket deal, even like Alex said 16.50 ish for parts leaves 63.50 for labor??????/ Damn do they give you vasoline with that or just dry hump you? guess I feel about shop rates the way Joe Pecsi felt bout drivethru's "see see never go to the drivethru..They f%^&K you at the drivethru"

lol@my cousin vinny

they used vasoline! lol Well I am looking for a new mechanic and I'm also learning more about repairing cars so hopefully one day i'll be able to do small shit like that myself. Unfortunately, He was the only choice I had. All my neighbors go to him and from what i heard he does a good job and doesn't rip u off.

I'm not sure what else he added with the valve cover gasket. ne way. it's done. i'll know better next time though.

Thanx you guys

Well that just fuckin suck. I would beat the shit of the mechanic. That is one reason why I do all that work on my car.

I do most of my work, I kinda am mechanically inclined, well mechanically reclined at times but hey if the US government trust me to fix airplanes. Seriously though, its always good to know as much as you can about yer car, that keeps ya from gettin screwed and saves ya money
