Total Noob Question: What is a cat-back?

Title says it all. What is a cat back and how does it work?

its a new exhaust pipe that is bigger than stock, usually 2.25 inches in diameter, that runs fromt he back of the cat to the rear of the car. it usually includes some kind of performance muffler

cat is short for catylitic converter which is right under the shifter at the bottom of the car. Cat back exhaust starts after the converter to the tip. This way you don't have to mess around with the catylitic converter which by the way is made to get real hot to burn off gases for emitions purposes. Hope that answers your question. Dont feel to bad everyone has to start somewhere.

Well here's a pic of the custom catback I had made for my car. And that fat part of the piping towards the top of the pic almost at the end of the piping, is the stock resonator.
