H e l p ! What is the easiest way to get the alternator out of my carbed engine. It gets jammed between the frame and lower block. My book says to remove left axle and alternator mount but I can't even get it near enough to the axle. I've tried turning it every which way. It seems like I need to move the engine forward!

hmm... they slide the alternator under the intake manifold over to the left side of the car... then they lift the alternator up and out... you can easily remove the big black vacuum line box... the wires will need to be disconnected though.. but they have clips and are fairly easy to pull out... the box itself it held down by 10mm bolts.

Take off the air cleaner so you can see what you're doing and also unbolt the heater hose bracket at the firewall to let alt pass beneath.

Just pull the axle - it's not a big deal

Also take off oil filter. Makes it easier.

pulling the axle isn't a huge job, but it's more work than you need to do. after you remove the air box you should be able to get it out. i've done it.

2 weeks ago i broke 2 breaker bars trying to get an axle nut off.

Goddamn, I remember when I replaced my alternator, I thought I was going to have to pull the whole damn motor for awhile there, I managed to get it out though by twisting it around a bit and taking off my wheel, I wasn't gonna pull my axel for an alternator.

The easiest way it to just take out the whole engine, duh!

Actually my alternator was just seized. I decided to chicken out of replacing it for now and soak the sucker in oil. It's back in service!! I think the axle is going soon anyway and I'll do the two together. Grant, you're right about the axle nut...now I know why they call them breaker bars. I finaly got myself a 3/4 inch drive breaker and an 8 ft pipe..now it's a piece of cake
Thanks for all replies...you guys rock!!!
