distributor types

I was reading through the old posts regarding distributors because I need to change mine soon. In the posts i read there are two types? What are the differences between the two and how come they aren't interchangable? Thanks.

Look at the base of Dist cap. Hitachi caps are round. Tec caps have 1 flat side (like a capitol D).
