View Full Version : 3Geez on IRC?

I was thinking about IRC this morning and wondering why 3geez is the only community that I belong to that doesn't have an IRC server or at least an IRC channel. Has this ever been attempted before? Would anyone be will to host it? For those if you who don't know what IRC is:
http://www.mirc.com/ircintro.html
So who's with me on this? I see so many threads in Offtopic and otherwise that would be much better suited to IRC. Not to mention alot of the reply's lately have been almost realtime. IRC is much better when dealing with situations that need immediate responces.

We've gone through this a dozen times. Everyone wants a chatroom, whether it be IRC or AIM, or Java. We've had numerous chatrooms in the past. But then nobody uses it after a week or so. My opinion is that for the amount of use it gets, a chatroom just isn't worth the trouble. And that's pretty much why 3geez doesn't have a chatroom.

Really, when was the last one? I honestly don't remember any since I've been a member.

The only reason no one goes to the chatroom is 1.) It isn't permanant, 2.) You have to use an external client, and 3.) Not many know about it.

We had nightly chats for about a month, and then people stopped coming because of other obligations etc.

How hard would it be to set up an AIM 3geez chatroom and just leave a bot in it? Then we could have a direct link to it from the main page.

When was this? How was it advertised on the site?

If someone did that, it would be great, because the room has to be recreated everytime we want to chat.

And yes, if we had a link to it from the homepage, we would definitely get more visitors. Not some post at the top of each forum, because we have proved that not many read those.

It was at the top of the off topic forum I think. I think the mod's deleted it.

I'd be more then happy to leave somthing open at work. As long as I don't have any power failures here the chat would stay open. I'm in charge of all the pc's so it wouldn't be a problem.

If we can get a link to it on the homepage of 3geez, then I think we'd be set. But I think most people here use AIM.

BTW, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I go to type a reply and I hit submit and there are already one or two reply's.

Is there a way to link to an AIM chat?

Java would be simpler, probably attract more people also.

It would have to be on a seperate page though, not like some of these you see on the side or bottom of the page. They slow the site down way to much. Despite my name I really don't like Java stuff. I find in generally to be slow and buggy. Plus most copy's of XP coming out are SP1a wich does not include the Java VM. I don't know if that is nessary or not to run a Java chat.

I think a link to an outside page on the 3geez homepage would be good. And of course, this page would have a Java chatroom.

I still feel IRC is the best out there, but that's probably my geek side talking.

MrBen

Well I think the thing that shed most people away from chatting in the past is they don't want to download some other program.

HostileJava

Well if Java wouldn't work out AIM would still be a decent solution since most member already have it.

Exactly..people don't really want to learn a new program. I think AIM is the best if you actually want the chatroom to be used.

Why is it that other vBulletin communities have a chatroom? Example:

http://www.forumculture.com/

Why can't we do that?

HostileJava

Well now, that is a really good idea. They have an IRC chatroom that is accessed through your own IRC client or there java client. I like very mucho.

MrBen

I think a chatroom like that would bring down the post whoring considerably.

HostileJava

and I think that's a really important point to consider when deciding if we should or should not do somthing like this.

Yeah and you would actually be able to say something more than every 60 seconds

Heh. Yeah. IRC is more professional. All the smart people will know about it and how to use it. This will filter out all the retards, no offense. Also, yeah...with java, you can host an IRC client online. I have Trillian Pro, so either either way we go, I will for sure be there. Let's get it up already.

im with hostile. ive never heard of a 3g chat room.

and same thing. i usualy leave my computer on alllllll the time. and its dial up but it rarely gets logged off. as long as someone is in it then it would stay open. if everybody went in and stayed there as much as possible those that got logged off the duty of keeping it open would pass on. what im saying is that if everybody did there best to be logged in the chat room whether they were in it or not or had thei away mesage up or not then the chat would remain open.

i know somepeople cant access java chats becasue of firewalls and such.

Hahaha @ wasting bandwidth. What does it use like a tenth of a kBps? I used to host a few IRCds a while back. Really doesn't waste that much :P
